Which other states do you hold a CHL in and why?

I'm trying to decide if I need to apply for an non-resident license in any other state to gain access to states that do not have reciprocity with TX. I read in another thread that NH would allow a non-resident CHL for $20 if you hold a TX CHL. Since NH has reciprocity with AL having it allows you to travel through AL.
Thanks

Exactly!
AL requires a hand gun to be unloaded and in the trunk if you don't have a license. Walking around on foot, you can "open carry" without a license.

The NH non resident license is the way to go if you want to just drive thru AL without unloading and locking up in the trunk.

You can down load the application off the net and apply by mail. I think they will even accept a personal check. I did it last year and it took less than 2 weeks to receive the license. Back then it was good for several other states that didn't accept the TX CHL. Now TX CHL covers everything the NH permit does except AL, I think?

Regards, OE

Every TX CHL holder should have an NH non res permit. For $20 and a stamp how can you go wrong?

How can you go wrong getting an NH CHL?

You could waste $20 because you never leave the state.

On the other hand
I waste $20 (that I can't account for) nearly every weekend.

New Hampshire only gets a Texas CHL holder Alabama and New Hampshire.

BTW

I have a NH CHL.

I was headed to Virginia 18 months ago and planned to take I10 through Alabama.

At the time a NH CHL got a Texas CHL holder several states.

I've got Utah... During my last renewal, the instructor was pusing doing the Utah permit for an extra 20 buck and I bit. It's good in Alabama, so that's why I went for it. There's one or two other states where it's valid and Texas isnt't.

Back in January of 2003, I went to Camp LaJune, N.C. where my son was stationed before shipping out to Iraq. We pulled a large U-Haul trailer out there with us so we could move his household goods back here. This was before I had my CHL and didn't have a clue about the laws or know about packing.org. My dad was in the Navy and had always carried a gun in the car when we were going back and forth to California and later to Virginia (this was in the 60's and early 70's) so I had always just presumed that you were allowed to carry while traveling. My wife and I went to N.C and back without one bit of trouble, all the while I had a loaded BHP on the seat under the fold down console, with another mag and a full box of ammo in the side pocket of my door. Later I was told that they are bad about stopping Texas plated cars in Alabama and Georgia to check for guns. I thought they had meant for gun smuggling. Now I know what they meant. Boy, am I glad nothing happened and I hadn't broken any traffic laws.

While trying to understand where Texas stands in reciprocity, I've noticed that the map at packing.org is out of date:

Does anybody have an updated map? I know NM has signed reciprocity, but weren't their others too?

Texas is rapidly becoming a state that others who have CCW licenses are coveting...It used to not be that way just a year or two ago...Then all the reciprocity and unilateral recognition proclamations started adding up...

Even if its still $20 to get the Non Res NH permit...I may renew it one more time, and see if some other things happen in the next few years to improve the reciprocity between Texas and other states...Just to be on the safe side...Then if I don't need it, well...I'll have one more slot available in my wallet I suppose...

Yep, it needs a lot of work...

I wonder if someone has a program you can use to take a map template like the one at PDO, and get it updated and make it a sticky reference map on our website...

I tried it when PDO was shopping for a mapkeeper person, but I didn;t have a program that could take the image, save it and update it from time to time...

I like how it looks, but it sure needs a facelift...

If someone can point me to the most current list for Texas, I don't mind modifying the image, or even creating a new one.

Sad part is that I spent 10 minutes looking for that page on DPS, and couldn't find it. :) :)

But we Aggies are good at making others do our work for us. :) :)

Okay, you guys got me. Someone has already done a great set of maps for us and I haven't had the time to get them into a sticky. I'll try to work on that in the next two weeks.

Chas.
