Need gun advise

I usually hate threads like this and here I am starting one. I guess I need to be punished.
Anyway, I am considering trading my Kimber Ultra Carry for a Glock 19 or some other similar small 9mm.
Why would a I trade a perfectly good 1911 style .45 for a plastic 9mm?
Well, the reasons I keep telling myself are first and foremost is cost of shooting. Even with loading my own .45, 9mm is still cheaper. Due to cost I haven't been shooting near as much as need or would like. With the new baby and 2 day care payments looming keeping the Kimber AND buying a new gun is out of the question. I am not a person who has internal 9mm vs. .45 debates. I am firmly in the shot placement camp. so i wouldn't feel undergunned with a 9mm.
Second, although I have no trouble concealing the Kimber, the grip safety isn't comfortable poking into my considerable love handles. It's not unbearable. I know carrying a gun is supposed to be comforting, not comfortable, still I can't help but think that it can be both.
I love my 1911. The optimal solution would be to get the Kimber Pro Carry in 9mm. It lets me keep the 1911 platform and get 9mm but it brings back the love handle issue.
I won't be abandoning the 1911 as it is my first love in pistols and I still have my full size Springfield. That gun will either go to my one of my kids or will be burried with me.
Help! What advise can you, my TexasCHLForum friends, offer?

I think you are making a good choice. I don't know what your current pistol is worth when compared to the Glock, but the caliber issue is solid and I completly understand you from every mentioned aspect. I love 1911's and always will, but the choice I make 90% of the time goes for a 9MM for all of the reasons that you mentioned and the fact that I can recover my sights and natural aim much quicker. I have a model G17 and find it very comfortable. If anyone gives you grief...don't worry, I'll go shoot with you!

You may also want to take a look at Sprinfield Armory's XD 9 Service model.
I went to buy a Glock and ended up with an XD. It is much more comfortable for me. Mainly in that is "just feels natural".
Good luck!

+ 1 for lumberjack. My son has the SA XD in a .40 & loves it. I have shot it & really like it too for a non-1911. You really don't need any advice. You have already looked at your needs & thought through them. All us grandparent type on the board remember when $'s were always the deciding factor. Don't take an undue beating on the Ultra just to get rid of it. Someone here should want it. I might consider another one as would many.

Yes, you definitely need to be punished. Go to the nearest confessional for instructions.

Let's talk.
I have a G-26 w/night sights or a Kahr PM9 I might be willing to swap with you. I already have a bunch of holsters (IWB, OWB, leather, kydex) you could use for the G-26. I have 5 mags for the G-26 also.

Thanks for all the replies.
The main guns that I have been considering are the Glock and Kahr lines. So, Ray, I may be interested in chatting with you. Maybe we could set up a time in the comming weeks where I could try out that Kahr if it wouldn't be too much trouble.
As far as the XD line. They are good guns. They feel nice. The grip angle and feel are similar to a 1911. I just haven't warmed up to the triggers on the ones that I've shot. Can't give specifics other than it just didn't feel right to me. I like the Glock trigger much better.

DWS....I may be interested in buying your Kimber Ultra Carry from you. I don't have anything to trade except maybe some dead presidents! That is the next gun that I need to add.
I have a 5" Kimber TLE & a 4" Kimber Pro Carry so "Just One More" may get me satisfied

See I told you there was a good trade in these parts. Keep talking for a few days

& a couple of you guys may have a great Valentine present. (Above 'con looked more like a huddle to me than "grouphug") Concerning the XD, well some feel good to one & others feel good to another. G's are fine quality fire arms. Just ugly as a G. to some us us.

Good trading.

You must go to your local gun store and trade your credit card for a colt.

Thanks for the offers, everyone. I've replied to each of you. After doing more research I think I've decided on the Glock 19. I am going to try a friend's along with his carry rig to see if it will work for me.
