I am kind of new to the forum, so I my apologizes if this topic has been previously discussed. But are Active Duty still required to take the Proficiency Certification, after some reading I saw that we don’t pay the same price for the app fee, but was just curious about the handgun cert class. I am out of state so I wanted to get my Texas permit without having to come home, because when I do come home I get tried up with the family.

If you are active duty, you can skip the shooting proficiency by submitting documentation that you have qualified with a handgun in the military within the past year.

You are still required to complete the classroom portion, and it is required that this be done in state. So, looks like you are still going to have to give up a day from the family to do this.

Or better yet, bring them too and make it a family bonding time CHL class!

Thanks for the info, I didn't have this problem in South Carolina...Military is exempt period with proof of a range qual in the last 2 years.

How long is the classroom portion? Well what is the minimum standard

Minimum required by the state of Texas is 10 hours.

Depends on your instructor. I had an excellent one (Gary Swan, Kenpo Karate, Universal City) and the class was enjoyable. Reason (IMHO) that Texas does not let you out of the class it that it's 90% how to defuse situations, how to avoid situations, the laws, and the like. Wouldn't be covered in any military training.

Good piont we train to engage a target, and not to defuse a situation

You still have to take the class on the laws and pass the written test.

If you're afraid the civilians will shoot better than you you can skip the range test and use military proof.

If you are military and dont get expert on the civilian range, you got problems
