Just curious... In Texas, if a car dealership bought a gun for the purpose of giving it away to a stranger, wouldn't that begin to flirt with the whole straw purchase thing?

When businesses do this, they use an FFL to complete the transfer.

Since they are advertising, even if the ad says, "get a free pistol with a vehicle purchase," they are in the business of selling firearms.

yup. They probably have a deal worked out with a couple of stores or a manufacturer, either to hand out coupons redeemable at the store or to get an FFL from their hunting department to come out and bring some store stock. If it's the latter I would bet they would make the deal with a gun store; they'd be more apt to help.

This is exactly the case. The car dealer give the buyer a coupon for the pistol or $250 worth of gas.
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hZQK ... te]Through the end of the month, car buyers at Max Motors in Butler will have a choice — $250 toward either a gun purchase or gasoline.

General manager Walter Moore said that so far, most buyers have chosen the gun, adding that he suggests they opt for a semiautomatic model "because it holds more rounds."

(In the fine print, the ad on the Web site explains, "Check written toward purchase price" and also mentions, "Approved Background Check REQUIRED!!")[/quote]$250 should just cover the cost of a Kel-Tec P3AT. Then the buyer has to fork over $15-25 per box of ammo, and the dealer can probably talk him into buying a holster.

Yep! I saw this on the news. What a way to get free national advertisement of your business. Only in America! :patriot:

It's the same thing as giving away a gun as a prize during a competition or a raffle. They may pay for the gun, but the winner is still subject to the background check. I've got a friend who is a PHENOMENAL skeet shooter, and wins 5-6 shotguns every year in assorted competitions! Lubbock EMS has had raffles for a Kimber before donated by Sharp Shooter's for those of you who know Lubbock. Sounds like the same rules apply here.

Stop giving him a hard time. Ya gotta start somewhere and just because he only has two isn't any reason to make fun of him.

Sorry, israel67 - you just gotta get here and understand.

Sorry, been at the lake this weekend. I have 2 because they're just so darn cool! ;-) Seriously, I got a full sized Raptor for target shooting and general playing with and it's overall coolness factor. I fell in love with the 1911 platform so much, that I decided to get an ultra sized and make it my daily carry. I love my Glocks and my HK, but there's just something about the feel of a 1911 in my hand that makes it an extension of my arm. I can shoot so much better with one. Even the Ultra Covert II with it's tiny 3 inch barrel is suprisingly accurate at 25 yards! Here ya go, israel. I'll let you drool over pics. When you make it over here, I hope we can meet up sometime. I'd love to take you shooting!
