"Nobody can deny that hobby directly results in people being shot and killed on the streets of our city."
"It's a hobby that creates danger to others. Guns are stolen routinely from so-called legal owners. It's time that we got those guns out of Toronto," he said.

"Do we as a society value safety, or do we value a hobby that creates danger?" he asked. "Nobody can deny that hobby directly results in people being shot and killed on the streets of our city. Those are the facts. And they're provable again and again and again."
Again and again and again some politician makes claims that are neither backed up by any evidence whatsoever or are the least bit defendable. Someone ought to challenge him to produce these "facts" correlating shooting ranges with increase in gun violence and have him eat his words.

Once I hear someone using an intentionally misleading phrase like, "so-called legal owners" I tend to ignore everything else that comes out of their mouths.

I would not have a problem with what he proposes, as long as he applies it to himself and the city government. If you want to "talk the talk" then "walk the walk". Shut down ALL shooting ranges and ban ALL firearms (including law enforcement/military/private security) if you wish. Hang a big sign at the city limits declaring that you are a "gun free" city. Just be sure to REQUIRE all local politicians to live within the city limits and make arrangements for highways to handle counterflow traffic so the mass exodus of citizens does not create a traffic jam.
People like this are willing to say or do anything to advance their power as long as it does not apply to them.

I guess he missed the memo that the gun itself isn't dangerous, criminals with guns are.

This is a key step in initiating repression. Sounds like the mayor has solidly planted his flag against freedom.
I'd think that this should be a motivator to get all the training you can.

I'd like to see the statistics he uses to back up such ridiculous claims.

Gee, you mean they're
not all being smuggled north out of the U.S.? That's a newsflash, and quite a turnabout from the usual anti-gun Canuckian politician!
