I am buying a gun from a very trusted friend. How do I register it in my name? Anything else I need to do?

Texas has no registration.

As far as state regs go, Smokewagon is exactly right; there are none.

For Federal (ATF) paperwork, it should be easy enough as long as neither of you are a prohibited person. Simply take it to an FFL, and they will basically give you a 4473 (it may be a different form for transfers), you fill it out, they call it in. It would be the same as if the store had done a consignment sale only in this case the price is $0 and the store never took actual possession of the weapon. You will need to take the actual gun so they can get make/model/serials.

That's not a registration although some call it backdoor registration by the ATF.....

I thought that FFLs and 4473s were not necessary in Texas for a FTF transaction.

Both he and I have our CHL. I will be carrying it so I want it registered to me.

As posted above there is no gun registration in Texas. You sound like you wish to document the transfer of the gun from him to you. Your best bet would be to have a dealer perform a transfer for you, however he will probably laugh when he learns you have your chl. A second option would be for you and the seller to get a photo copy of each others CHL along with a Bill of Sale. If you have concerns that the gun may be stolen or otherwise has a bad history you might contact a local LEO and request they run the serial number for you.

No need to involve any dealers. You can sell to whomever you please FTF. Like selling a power tool. Or an Xbox. The only thing I would highly recommend is providing a bill of sale or signed receipts for both parties. I've watched enough People's Court to know that you always get a receipt.

If I had to pay a FFL every time I bought a gun FTF, I wouldn't have enough money to buy a gun.

Then you will have to move to California. You have been told there is no registration in Texas.

Actually there is no national registration either...yet. Technically 4473's aren't registration either.

You don't want gun registration. Registration == Confiscation. Trust me.
