Howdy!
I just noticed yesterday the the Credit Union that I am a member of has an old sign placed at the entrance that states: "FIREARMS PROHIBITED ON CREDIT UNION PREMISES". It has the circle with slash over a picture of a gun as well. I am tempted to check with one of my neighbors, who is a Vice President at the credit union (and is an avid hunter), about this sign. It has obviously been in place for many years and may just be an oversight. They may very well be willing to remove the sign or replace it with something like " the Unlicensed possession of a firearm....." type sign. As it stands, it does not legally stop me from conceal carry on the credit union premises. Even a person without a CHL can have a concealed handgun in their vehicle on the credit union parking lot (assuming they are legally able elsewhere according to Texas law).

Should I just leave it alone?

If I were you, it would depend on how well you know your neighbor... or if I was willing to change banks/CU's... if it's in question, I am willing to change.

Yes. They may well know it is invalid for CHL holders and be OK with it. However, sometimes bringing these things to their attention advises them of the CORRECT way to keep a CHL from entering their property, and they end up doing that. Best left as is IMO.

If you ask, he just may do his research and put up a valid 30.06 sign, in which case you can't carry into the bank. Right now, you can. Let sleeping dogs lie.

Also, being an avid hunter is not a guarantee that he believes in your RKBA. Remember that a favorite gun grabbers' canard is to say that you don't need a pistol to hunt with.

Oh, if I were to inquire and the credit union changed to a 30.06 sign, I would indeed move my accounts elsewhere.

My vote would be: Leave it alone. Don't spoil it for the rest of us.

Well, I decided to talk to my neighbor. The sign has been there for years. He is a CHL holder and he is fully aware of the proper signage "If" he wanted to make it enforceable. They have a policy that will not allow their employees to carry. He told me that if I had my gun concealed, it would never be an issue. He did say that he would carry at work if they allowed it. He also told me that he has been asked about the sign by others in the past.

Glad it worked out this time, but our general board consensus on this very issue is to leave it alone and not tell anyone, lest you risk them putting up an enforceable 30.06 sign in response.

Sorry to thread hijack, but could you go up to a Taco Cabana, and tell them that their 30.06 is in fact not complaint and unenforceable (even though it is) in the hopes that they actually put up an unenforceable sign like a gunbusters? That would be pretty funny if it actually worked.

I understand the general consensus. But, since I know the guy and have done some construction work for the credit union (he oversees the facilities maintenance and construction), I know several of the board of directors, and I am a member with a vote on some issues, I decided to get some information. I did not bring up the 30.06 sign, I did not tell him that the sign that is posted is not going to stop a CHL holder. I actually asked him if the sign meant that I could not leave a gun in my truck on the credit union parking lot. From there, he volunteered a wealth of information, including that he is a CHL holder. Most places, I would not have made the inquiry and left well enough alone.

Oh, there is no Taco Cabana here, so I guess you are on you own with that one.

I just saw this at an office building I frequent. No signs outside the building or at the entrance to the building, 30.06 or otherwise. This sign is posted outside an FDA office on the first floor.



I'd never seen this before, but I'm assuming there may be something similar outside a post office? (Haven't been to a post office since I got my CHL) And just because there is a federal office inside this non-federal building doesn't mean I can't carry to other parts of the building, right?

Correct. See 18 USC 930. Only the FDA office itself is off limits:

(g) As used in this section:
(1) The term “Federal facility� means a building or part thereof owned or leased by the Federal Government, where Federal employees are regularly present for the purpose of performing their official duties.

Despite the notice that says "this means CHLs too!", there's always an argument over whether a CHL is an "other lawful purpose" under (d)(3). I don't know that it's been tested in court.
