I was under the impression that when you purchase a Handgun at any legitimate Gun Shop or Gun Show, you have in effect "registered" that Handgun.
Is that correct?

You have a form for a background check that the selling dealer must retain if you buy from a dealer.

If you buy from an individual, no paperwork is required. Some of us (at least I do) want to see a drivers liciense to make sure they are a resident.

Unless you buy more than 1 gun in a 5day period from the same dealer... At that point the dealer is required to fill out another form with your information, the information about each gun, and the dealer has to submit that to the ATF within (I think) 2 days. The buyer never needs to know about this second form, but the dealer is required to send it to the ATF... And you better believe they keep a good record of them.

That applies only to handguns, and the record also goes to the state police. (I have no idea what Texas DPS does with them.)

One interesting point is that this law refers to "business days." If a dealer sells only at gun shows, 5 business days could mean two months.

No. The definition of a business day is quite clear: weekdays that aren't national holidays (Texas State agencies take additional holidays). Just because you aren't doing business doesn't mean it's not a business day.

Given the amount of trouble they have coming up with a logical and consistant definition of a machine gun it is little surprise that their definition of a business day is also twisted to give them more control.

I always thought that registering a gun in Texas was when after puuling the slide, bolt or lever back and when the cartridge is installed ever so snugly into the chamber it is then "registered".

I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

True, and "regulated" means shooting to point of aim.

A business day for purposes of reporting multiple sales of pistols or revolvers is a day that a licensee conducts business pursuant to the license, regardless of whether State offices are open.

I think Jim might be right.
