Okay don't anyone laugh but I am making an assumption here . I have several 9mm handguns and to this point I have assumed that they are all 9mm. So now I am looking at a Springfield 9mm that uses 9X19. Then is see other references to 9X19, 21, and so on. Can the first person that picks themselves up off the floor please tell me what gives?

9x19 (Parabellum) is the same 9mm ammo that we all know and love.

yeah, my understanding is that 9X19 is the same as 9mm parabellum or 9mm luger.

9X21 is referred to as 9mm largo

and 9X18 is often called 9mm makarov

Anyone can feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

You don't want to shoot any of them in a gun that they are not specifically chanbered for. Bad things can happen!

Another phrase that comes up is status quo ante bellum, used when the parties agree to return things (like borders) back to how they were before a war started.

I should note that the various 9mm chamberings are not interchangeable, even when the ammo fits. Since rimless rounds headspace on the rim, that's not usually a problem. Drop a 9x17 (.380) round in a 9x19 chamber, and it will move forward out of reach of the firing pin. If the extract managed to hold onto the round so that the firing pin makes contact, it would be like shooting a .38 Special in a .357 Magnum revolver -- no big deal.

If you managed to do the same thing with a 9x18 (Makarov), you could expect serious overpressure, because the Makarov bullet is 0.363, versus 0.355 for 9x19 and 9x17. It's unlikely to happen, though, because the Makarov uses a straight-walled case, that probably wouldn't move far enough into the 9x19's tapered chamber.

Another example: 7.62x25 and .30 Mauser are physically interchangeable, but were designed in different centuries for entirely different pressure levels. Firing a hot Romanian 7.62x25 designed for submachineguns, in a C-96 broomhandle, could have disastrous results.

Good question. Too many people treat different chamberings the same, when they're not (like 7.62x51 NATO, versus .308 Winchester).

most likely you just have 9x19 guns. if you had a 9x18 or .380 you'd probably know it. if you are into buying surplus cz pistols, many of those are 9x18.
