Hey Waco folks...

I just noticed that a new member (Lonegun1894) was from the Waco area and thought it might be a good time to ask a question of him and anyone else from that area.

I will be up there for a race on 11 March (trail run), and wondered if anyone could suggest a possible hotel close to Cameron Park. It needs to be quiet and comfortable but I don't care about amenities... just a place to sleep the night before my first ultramarathon. Also - what is the terrain like at that park? Flat? Rocky? Hills? ...?

And if you want to come out and watch a moron run 50k, I will be running around the park for most of the day.

It's like rolling, gradual hills and (cough) "Mount Carmel's" etc etc...

If you do 50k, thats purty good...

If I had to run 50k, I'd rather dig in and defend myself right on the spot...

Good luck on your run sir...

It's only about 3 miles further than I did last weekend and it will be on the trail instead of the road - and that is easier for me to do. Besides, I have a 9 hour time limit... hoping to be done in 6 though.

That is awesome. I'd like to do an ultra some day. I did the Freescale Marathon last week for the third time. I was about to swear off Marathons at the end. Too much pain!!

Yeah, Freescale was what I did last weekend - second time for me. Last year I did the Distance Challenge. This year I skipped the DC, but I wanted to do something "new" so I thought ULTRA! Actually - I wanted to do Pike's Peak, but that might have to wait until next year. This year will be my first ultra and I might even do the "Marathons of Texas" series next winter. Might also try for a 50 miler... maybe 100k or 100 miler even. But let's see how I do at my first long distance trail run first.

WOW you are the man! Good luck and let us know how it goes. A 50 miler is the most I can ever see considering. I'm looking forward to doing a few Half Marathons this year. A lot easier training and recovery.

If I'm not mistaken Cameron park is where all the mtn bike trails are. IRIC its extremely hilly. Have fun with that!

Are you gonna carry on the run?

+1 flint. WE are too old or too smart to run for fun. ;-)

Believe it or not, I am actually looking for something that I can use for that purpose. I have the BUG (S&W 642) that would work, but I need a better carry method. I have what works for training runs, but I go lighter on race day...

Giga - looks like you were right. Most of the google results about Cameron Park have to do with mountain bike magazines and stuff. From the official city website:
http://www.waco-texas.com/city_depts/parks/trails.htm

"The daring can rip down trails like “Ho Chi Minh and the “Thor, Babbler, Bat Cave trio, or the sane can leisurely stroll through vines and bamboo along “California 56. Each trail is named and marked for difficulty, and all interwine into beautiful maze."

No way this will be all the sane trails either...

Ok, now I don't feel so silly about considering carrying while running. So what do you carry and how? I run around Whiterock Lake in Dallas pretty often. On the weekends I have no issues. But week days during the day it is lonely, though well patroled by DPD.

Also, how did you do at Freescale? I was 3:55 this year. Missed my goal of 3:45 but Oh Well. It is cool to have another runner here.

My freescale was a training run for the Waco Five-0. Time ended up at right about 5:30, but I had a great day and ran with a friend who was having IT Band problems.

I carry a S&W 642 in an uncle mike's IWB (clip is nothing) inside my waist mounted camelbak. Not fast to get to, and I really do have to come up with something better.

That is GREAT. Running really should be all about having a great time. I also us a Camelback waistpack, I do not yet have anything small enough for it though. I need to get a Glock 27 now.
