Big time unaware. I bet it never happens to him again. I was a cop for 12yrs and always had my gun on me or under my right leg while driving. I'm really surprised they didn't kill him unless they didn't see his uniform until they were down the road.

One of the things I consciously do to avoid confrontations is to drive a "Grandpa Car" that no one will want to swipe. It's an old Grand Marquis and even when it was a new Grand Marquis, it was a grandpa car then. A Dodge Magnum is a pretty hot car and one that hijackers may be interested in.

But yea, he should have had his gun on him. However, the article didn't say that he wasn't armed. It just says that the car contained his duty kit. Even if he was armed, it's extremely difficult to draw a weapon when sitting in a driver's seat. Unless one uses a cross draw holster it's virtually impossible to do it quickly. I know I can't and especially since it has to be concealed under my shirt.

I will agree with the situational awareness issue and there's a whole bunch of things that can be done to be more aware and to leave escape avenues.

Then after if he was armed, perhaps he didn't feel it was appropriate to go blasting away at his car as it was speeding away. The Houston Cron headlines would then have read, "Racist Cop shoots African American suspects over New Sports Car. Women & Children Affected Most" and then we would have to put up with all the associated junk for the next 6 months. Anyone remember Joe Horn?

I'm glad the officer is safe. His gun will turn up somewhere and if a crime was committed with it, that crime would have been committed anyway if it was the officers gun or not.

Houston does have some bad areas and ever since Katrina, they have intensified.

I don't see anything in the article that mentions the skin color of the cop or the thieves.

Anyway, by leaving the firearm and taser for the crooks, he had nothing to shoot them with.

Guilty. Busted. You are correct. Gotta watch what I say. The article does not mention race by either party and I was making assumptions. BUT, knowing what I know about the Houston Chronicle, if race isn't mentioned concerning the Bad Guys in a story, they are almost always black. Plus, the citizens in the 59/Lyons area are primarily black. I was going with the odds. I didn't mean to offend and sorry if I did. I was just stating a fact about how the dudes at the Houston Chron think and how a story would have been reported.

Other than that, I was offering the scenario that the officer may have still been armed when he left his car. Most officers I know have a carry pistol and a duty pistol.

That must be quite a luxury. I found out from a good friend that the deputies for the Comal County Sheriff's Office are not permitted to carry off-duty. His dad has to get a Texas CHL in order to carry a handgun off-duty. I find that very odd, considering that our Sheriff is a former DPS sergeant. :headscratch

But then again, I'm sure our Sheriff has his reasons.

It could be a county thing that our Sheriff grudgingly complies with. I don't know for sure, though.

If the CCSO issues ID cards to their deputies, and the deputies are qualified, they can legally carry off duty even if the sheriff tells them not to.

If the sheriff has instituted a policy that says deputies may not carry off duty, then I wouldn't think having a CHL would matter.

This is a matter of what's legal, versus what will get you fired. It's no different than a workplace posting a non-30.06 notice -- you can't be prosecuted, but you can sure be canned!
