If it's not one thing it's another in this wonderful city.

You'll notice that the article said that the victims gave the scoundrels everything they wanted.

A lot of good that did. :mad5

Yep, noticed that.

I guess it's just easier for the bad guys to get the goods handed to them as opposed to having to dig for stuff on a body.

Let's bring hangin' back!!!

We have this behavior in our society because we tolerate it.

How many of you have thought about how you would respond to an attempted carjacking?

You’re sitting in an easy for a bullet to penetrate tin can…if you’re riding legally, you have a seatbelt on that will limit your initial movements (do you practice drawing with your seatbelt on?)…if you are driving, you also have the steering wheel to deal with. Most likely, by the time you know it’s a carjack you’re looking at a gun pointed at you. If you also have family or friends in the car that will compound your problem (what if they have a weapon pointed at them too?)…an easy situation it’s not, and like most armed robberies, you’re starting out behind the curve!

Fortunately, like home invasions this doesn’t happen that often…but unfortunately, like home invasions it seems to be on the rise.

For me personally, if driving out of the situation isn’t an option I will comply with their requests until I’m either exiting, or have exited the vehicle. At least then I’m free of the belt and steering wheel and with my feet under me I’ll be able to shoot and scoot if I need to. My wife and I have discussed our roles (she has her CHL and is pretty good with her pistol), but if there’s someone else in the vehicle that doesn’t know what to do and when to do it that complicates the situation.

If a bullet will penetrate a car door going in, why not going out? I might be tempted to try it if the opportunity presented itself. That being said, if the BG has the drop on me, I'm going to comply until or unless an opening presents itself.

Don't drop 'em where they stand. Drop 'em from a helicopter. Far more satisfying.

Carjackers are vicious and operate on hair trigger emotions. They'll open fire at the first sign of hesitation or resistance. Driving out while ducking down in the seat is usually your best move if you have the opportunity, but it only works if you see it coming, and the move has to be executed before the BG's have fully closed in. Once they're pointing weapons at close range, your options are severely limited as TXRancher has capably outlined. Your 3 second (optimistic) draw/fire sequence from a seat belted sitting position is not going to beat their .75 second sequence with their already drawn and pointed weapons. Unless an opportunity opens up (perhaps on being ordered to exit the vehicle), whether you're armed or not is unlikely to make a whole lot of difference once the incident is fully underway.

bdickens has a passive solution here that would work really well. It's a little expensive, but it should certainly defeat the average carjacker just about every time as long as you keep the doors locked. ;-)

Wasn't it Bill Jordan who said that you can't out-draw a drawn gun?
