Man Arrested Near Capitol After IED, Rifle, Ammunition Allegedly Found in Jeep
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man is under arrest in Washington after an improvised explosive device, a rifle and some ammunition were allegedly found in his jeep, Capitol Police said Friday.
The man stopped to ask police for directions near the Capitol building at about 11 a.m. EDT Friday, at the intersection of 2nd and Independence Avenue Southeast, according to Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider.
The officer responding noticed a rifle case on the car seat and inspected the jeep, discovering the IED, rifle and ammunition. A canine unit was enlisted to help.
"They've all been rendered safe right now because they're in the custody of Capitol Police," Schneider told reporters at a briefing Friday.
The officer took the unidentified man into custody; the vehicle is still being searched.
Library of Congress employees near where the jeep was stopped were evacuated, and several roads are closed while police continue their investigation.
Schneider said that it wasn't clear what the man intended to do with the cache of weapons.
The IED is on its way to the FBI facility in Quantico, Va., for analysis.

Is it illegal to have a possibly locked case with a possibly disasemmbled rifle in it? I'm just wondering if there actually was probably cause, because aren't you allowed to transport firearms across state lines as long as it is done properly? There's no mention of this not being the case.
Also the IED could have simply been a bottle of vodka with a rag lying next to it, or a bedside clock next to tin of blackpowder. Were not going to hear any more about this, but I wish we would, I also wish he gets a good lawyer.

Turns out it was a loaded rifle (probably against DC's stupid laws) and a hand grenade, which is probably one of those dummy paper-weight hand grenades you can get anywhere.

Well, I just love how a rifle and a box of ammo is considered a "cache" of weapons.
I also love how he stopped to ask a police officer for directions, but he was obviously intent on doing "something" with his IED and his cache of weapons.

Didn't sound right to me either. People with evil intentions usually don't locate LEOs for directions.

If it was an actual IED, not a malatov or something, I hope they throw the book at him. HE makes people like us look bad, and the media is no help. His "cache" was probably 100 round box of WWB. Crazy libs.

I know it's not a big thing but it bugs me how the media has to now refer to any homemade explosive as an IED. what's wrong with the word "bomb"--we've been calling them that for hundreds of years. The Unabomber sent pipe bombs, not "pipe IEDs."
Anyhow, just a pet peeve of mine.

Because the USAF drops "bombs". "Bombs" are big iron tanks of TNT dropped from a mile up by a multimillion-dollar aircraft bearing the Stars and Stripes. When a "bomb" is used, it's a good thing; your neighborhood military ensuring those of you who don't end up as "collateral damage" will be free from terrorism.
By contrast, the terrorists have IEDs. IEDs are gasoline, oil or fuel-fertilizer bombs buried very deceitfully by the roadside by a couple of people who have nothing to lose, at a cost of about a hundred dollars a shot. When an IED is used, it's a bad thing; an act of terrorism meant to encourage your neighborhood military not to do what its doing, which is of course very correct and thus it is anti-American to say a word against it.
