Besides your big box retailers (Academy, Cabellas, etc), here are a few others you might look into. In central Austin, there is:

McBrides

In North Austin, there is:

Contact Info for Heritage Firearms ( website seems to be down, link )

And if you're LEO, EMS, etc, you can try:

GT Distributors

In Cedar Park:

The Gun Store

Also, just heard of a new one in Round Rock, it was started by an ex-GT Dist employee. Don't know anything about it, but thought I'd include it.

Austin Gun Liquidators

There are a couple of Red's as well (also are indoor ranges). North location is in Pflugerville. South location is in Austin near Oak hill.

I did not know about Austin Gun Liquidators untill I read it on this thread. Since I am in Round Rock, that really made me purk up and check them out. I just back from there, Scott is the owner and a great guy. He will treat you right, and his prices are really good. It looks like his prices are better then Academy. If you are looking for a new gun, I would check out Scotts' shop for sure. You might just save a couple bucks.
Thanks for the tip on this shop Aggiemm.

There is also TexGuns http://www.texguns.net/. It is a small, family owned type store with friendly people.

One other that hasn't been mentioned yet is 'cost + 10%'. It is a tiny place just off of Burnett (I think it is on Burnett loop). Very small selection but worth a look if your in that neck of the woods.

Here are my opinions about some of the stores mentioned . . .

McBride's: Closed Sunday. Good selection, friendly employees, HIGH prices.

Heritage: Second set of owners are ethically challenged. Ripped off once, I never darkened their door again. (Doggone forum rules on salty language . . . )

Sportsman's Warehouse: Good selection of rifles, pistols, and shotguns, including some EBRs. Friendly employees. Generally good prices, occasional sales during "customer appreciation days."

The Gun Store: Small selection, some class III stuff. They put together some EBRs themselves, I believe.

Texguns: Been there twice, proprietor was only interested in jawboning with his buddy each time. Tiny selection.

Academy: Decent prices on common guns - 870s, regular offerings from other manufacturers. Clerks are NOT very knowledgeable.

Cabela's: South of Austin off I-35 in Buda. Good selection, some fancy guns, but not the best prices around, unless you leverage coupons and specials.

Sportsman's Finest: http://www.sportsmansfinest.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Lots of high-end and Class III stuff. Only place I've been that had a 20mm cannon in stock.

Red's: Indoor range at both locations. Middle of the road prices, generally courteous staff.

Cost +10%: Heard it was up for sale. Went there once - owner was a rude, crusty old so-and-so, so I never went back.

GT Distributors: Mostly LEO sales, I've heard that sometimes they'll deal with a CHL holder, sometimes they won't.

Austin Gun Liquidators: New to me, I'll have to check them out.

They just opened. NO pistols, only ordinary "hunting" rifles and shotguns. Prices aren't very good, and their grand opening case-lot prices on ammo are no better than regular box prices at WalMart. The optics they sell are mostly low-grade stuff. Their coupons explicitly EXCLUDE firearms and ammunition. Much more interesting to browse at Sportsman's Finest, which is only a few minutes away.

Is he still open? Last I knew, he was closing in July, and had stopped making orders from suppliers. Something about the end of the world or something, I dunno. I used to buy my carry ammo there.

so is GT Distributors in Austin the same as these guys:

http://www.gtdist.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

??

What do you mean by "sometimes they'll deal with a CHL holder, sometimes they won't"?

Is it worth my effort to go down there to buy something, or should I just order it and let them ship it to me? I guess the gas is a little cheaper than the shipping.

yep. same people.

they'll sell you the gear, but there's a big 'LEO Only' sign above the firearms counter. I wasn't firearm shopping at the time, so I didn't ask if they'd sell to CHL.
