My new red Silverado Extended Cab pickup

One of the reasons I got my CHL is because of the neighborhood I live in (Old East Dallas). That point was driven home Wednesday morning.
Last Saturday, I came home with my new bright red Silverado extended cab pickup. I figured it was about time for a new truck, as my old C1500 (1991) has 266000 miles on it.
We went to the movies Tuesday evening because it was fifty cent night and when we got home, I hit the zapper to lock my truck. Later, I returned to my truck and got my coffee mug, but I apparently forgot to zap my truck locked. This zapping business is a pretty new concept to me, especially after driving an old work truck. Side note -- I want to learn how to shoot bullets so that they curve around objects that are between me and my target, just like in the movie Wanted
Wednesday morning, I went outside to get my paper about 5:00 AM, then returned to the house to eat a bite and drink some coffee. I walked outside at 5:30 to go to work, but immediately noticed that there was a rather bulky black shape on the ground next to the truck door. Hesitant to walk up to the shape, I pulled my Streamlight Scorpion -- which I had just used to find clean socks, etc. -- out of my pocket and clicked the end, but it did not come on. The batteries had just died
. I stepped a little closer to the black shape, but not too close, so I could hopefully see the object with my keychain Surefire.
What I saw in my driver's seat resulted in me yelling GET OUT OF MY TRUCK, to the street person who was sitting behind the steering wheel of my brand new red extended cab Silverado, but not behind the steering wheel of my old truck, which was parked on the street. At the same time I yelled at him, I took a step back while putting my hand on the grip of my holstered P229 loaded with 165 grain Ranger rounds in .40 S&W. I yelled a couple more times as he opened the door and he went towards the rear of my truck yelling that he was waiting for his friend Jesus who had told him he could wait in his truck.
He walked towards the corner, then came back a step and hollered, I didn't do anything to your truck, before he walked rapidly to the corner, then took off running down the street. I think his hurried exit had to do with the fact that he saw my hand / arm in position to pull a pistol, which he could probably see as I had the light to my back.
If he had come towards me, I would have pulled, but my main thought was that I might have to shoot someone. If he had taken one step towards me, I would have pulled, but he very quickly ran down the street. He would have had to go around my truck door to get to me, and looking back, I should have pulled anyway as I had no way of knowing what he had in his hands. Of course, from the time I first hollered at him to the time he ran down the street was a matter of a few short seconds.
I was pretty calm about the whole thing, and I called 911 as I walked to the corner to see where he ran to. The police did not find him, but I was told I handled it okay by the officers on the scene. My wife thought he was going to try to steal my truck but I think he was looking for something to steal. Again, if this happens again, the only thing I would do differently would be to pull my P229, as I have no way of knowing what he has in his hands or on his person.
