When reading over material for the shooting portion, it says you shoot from the ready position.

Can you tell me what is considered the ready position?

Are you standing in stance ready to fire or are you standing with arms relaxed at chest level with loaded gun in hand, where you have to get in your stance then shoot?

Here's one definition:

The "ready position" has the gun arm pointing forward and down at an angle of about 45°. The gun is in line with the body's centre line. When firing the arm is straight with the elbow and wrist locked. Initially the student keeps his arm in this state when in the ready position. When he has got into the habit of the arm being like this when he fires he can relax the wrist and elbow when in the ready position.

The most important thing is to keep your finger off the trigger and the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, usually aimed toward the ground.

You would be in position to shoot. Just raise the arms and add trigger.

I am sure your instructor will give you explicit instructions as to what he will expect of you on the firing line before you go to the range. Just pay attention and do exactly as he tells you and you will not have any problems.

Hint: "Tactical Breathing" will help overcome some of the adreneline dump/butterflies while standing in "low ready" position listening to and awaiting more range commands. I suggest to my students that, while keeping gun at about a 45 degree angle, to try and totally relax at shoulders, bend elbows and tuck elbows in next to ribs. Then breathe ... in through the nose for roughly 2 to 3 seconds, hold it for roughly 2-3 seconds, then slowly exhale through mouth for 2-3 seconds. Repeat at every opportunity. This will get oxygen built up for the brain to function more comfortably when the time comes to "shove" the front sight toward the target, lock wrists and elbows, obtain sight picture and shoot.

You will be glad to know that I shot 2 in the 7 (third position) and the rest were within the 8 circle. Of course we were not given scores just pass or fail, but I think I did pretty well.
