At least the chief's quote leaves no doubt it was pure stupidity.

Police say shooting was ‘accident’

Stephenville police said it was an accident that sent one man to a Fort Worth hospital Sunday after suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the left leg. Authorities were called to a residence located at 109 Cynthia Street in the Village Mobile Home Park late Sunday afternoon, after someone reported that a man had been shot. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Juan Espinoza, 24, bleeding profusely from his leg. He was taken to Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital, then transported by CareFlite to Fort Worth. Authorities would not release his condition, but said he is expected to survive.

Chief Roy Halsell said the case is still under investigation, but it appears the shooting was accidental.

“He (Espinoza) thought the revolver was empty and pulled the trigger, but there was still one round left in it,” Halsell said.

Espinoza, who apparently lives in the mobile home park, but not at the residence where the shooting occurred, was in the home with two other men, David Sharp and Don Trojanski. It is not clear what the men were doing with the gun or who owns the trailer.

Halsell said both of the witnesses have been interviewed, but authorities have still not had a chance to talk to the victim.

Gee... another injury from an "unloaded" firearm...
