Magnetic holster – damage to gun?

Well not a holster, but using a magnet to secure a handgun under a desk or register.

Any reason prolonged magnetic connection would damage a hand gun? I certainly would not use a nice pice or a particular strong magnet, but I would expect it to operate should I need it.

VERY long story short, I am looking to buy a business in the bad part of town, and want to “hang” a pistol under the till, via a magnet. up and out of the way from the shelf needed for other things...

I have thought about this for some time, and all I can think, is the gun will develop a light magnetic pull, and be a dirt magnet… no pun intended

thoughts?

How about hot gluing a cheap holster up there instead. What if the magnet stayed attached to the pistol when you pulled it out. Might send the magnet flying on the first shot.

That's a very interesting question.

Along with the idea of gluing a holster, is mounting one possible?

Check this out:

There are also variations on this. I have also seen one that is far less articulated. It was actually 2 parts (looked machined...for lack of the right term). There may be a thread buried somewhere here. If I find it, I will post it.

I learned by keeping a strong magnet stuck to the inside of my trunk lid that the magnetic field damages the auto paint.

A pattern on the outside of the trunk lid developed cracks in the paint and rusted on the exact reverse of where the magnet was placed.

Would it affect the finish on a firearm? I'm not sure but I wouldn't do it to any of mine.

If you go buy one of the kydex holsters, you can get a small piece of wood for each belt slide, then screw through the wood to mount the holster to the desk. The wood works as a spacer to keep the kydex from bending in too much, so the shape of the holster remains the same. This might be an inexpensive solution that will help.

IIRC, the cheap Uncle Mike's kydex IWB holsters, when disassembled, are pretty well set up for mounting to a desk. It's certainly a better use for them than trying to wear them IWB.

Take the paddle off of a Fobus or Uncle Mike's paddle holster (kydex). Bolt it to the desk.

FWIW if the gun is stainless and poly, then the magnet will not affect it much. I would be curious whether a strong magnetic field would affect the powder in the ammunition. I'd have to think about that for a while. But either way any steel or iron parts inside the gun (pins, sear, firing pin, springs, etc) might become magnetized and then not function correctly when you fire it. I would not be worried about long-term damage as much as stuff sticking together or moving out of place when you try and operate the gun, causing a jam or misfire or something like that. You know the recoil spring would be attracted to the magnet so it might over time pull the guide rod off center and cause a jam when you fire it. Or maybe the extractor gets magnetized so when you fire it, it collects particles that would have otherwise blown into the breech or down the barrel and jams. Or maybe there is a time when the trigger return spring is slack during cycling, and it tries to flip around and winds up wedged in sideways when the trigger resets because it is magnetized. Very small risk of any of this I'd say but too big for my tastes anyway. You wouldn't know you had a problem until you needed it.

Was not an original idea, I saw this posted on another forum.

there is also a youtub video promoting it, I would not buy this product, as magnates and a bracket are cheap, and perhaps fund in an old tool box, I would cover in fabric. In fact I have an old base from a CB antenna I was going to use, where it would be screwed to the wood,

the lay out of store is such that the current owner’s piece is not hidden, it’s easily seen, and I don’t want that.
