Looking to buy a 1911

I'll be looking to buy a 1911 in the near future. I want a full size not a compact. Was thinking about getting one in .40 S&W. Does anybody make one with double or staggered stack mags, in either .40 or .45? Wondering about opinions on the best one to get for a reasonable price. $1000 and under.

Para makes several models with double stacks in both .40 and .45. I have a Para 14.40 LDA (light double action) and I love it. It's not full size, has a 3.5 in. barrel, but holds 14 +1. Check it out at

here is an interesting and informative article if you don't know much about 1911's.

read all you can about the 1911 before you buy. if you buy a quality gun you probably won't be disappointed. they almost all need a break in period. don't give up! it is worth the effort. also don't use it as a carry gun until you are sure it is broken in and reliable. i shot my kimber ultra carry 1200 rounds before i switched from my glock as a carry weapon. it functioned great after the first 200 rounds but i wanted to be sure. besides that it is just a pleasure to shoot. even better is my combat commander.
warning: you will probably be deluged with opions for and against. seems you either love the 1911 or you don't. your opinion is the one that counts the most.
that being said i would go straight to the .45. no more appreciable felt recoil than the .40 and more energy. also one of the beauties of the 1911 is the small size of the grip. going to double stack eliminates that and it becomes harder to conceal.
again, your opinion is the one that counts the most. buy what feels good to you and what you like shooting. most ranges have rental guns; a good investment in time and money.
have fun shopping and shooting.

Good job. You bought before I could suggest to go ahead with a .45 instead of a .40. I think you'll be happier in the long run with the one you bought instead of a .40.

I wanted a .40 so I wouldn't have to have 2 different calibers in ammo but , what the heck.
