This is an email exchange between me and a guy who's interested in buying a computer monitor i'm selling on craigslist. I thought you guys would get a kick out of it. His first response is below.

The quote I use reflects his attitude of being responsible for your own safety and that of your own family as a personal responsibility, not the responsibility of the state. Government cannot protect you in your home. You are ultimately responsible for your own safety. Can i ask what exactly scares you about that?
To use a modern phrase, "The reason I carry a gun is because I can't carry a cop."
Just wanted to make sure you understood the meaning of the quote. It's often misinterpreted. I have nothing but the highest respect for police officers. In fact, if I could support my family on that salary I'd probably be one myself.
If guns themselves are the issue I'm more than happy to meet you at a gun range and let you shoot a variety of weapons. I'll pay for the whole shebang. The best way to lose your fear of something is to come to understand it.
