I just heard from another shooter that Ammo will expire

I think this is just a crazy rumor, and it's ridiculous but I was wondering if anyone here has a rumor about manufacturers changing the powder in ammo so that it will expire within six months. Supposedly this is to keep people from stockpiling on ammo. I see all kinds of problems with this, one being six months from when? What if it sits on the store shelf for two months. Sounds like a rumor to scare the masses even more.

First thought: Total fabrication (to put it nicely).
Second thought: A marketing guru's fantasy.

Sure, ammo might expire after, say, 300+ years or so

I heard that in 12 gauge shells they are putting in small pockets of gas that degrades the powder. I didn't believe it though, although it wouldn't surprise me at all if they tried it.

Can you imagine the law suits when rifles blew up because a bullet was lodged in the barrel and followed by a good round? Or, when someone's gun wouldn't fire when it was needed for self defense? Lawyers are drooling all over this one!

If you first heard about this in an email, Bill Gates will pay you $5 for every person you forward it to.

I'd almost believe that one...after my last experience with a brick of Remington Golden .22's

This is a thread related to primers with expiratons we did earlier this year.

That would be total nonsense. Sounds like a gunstore that is out of guns trying to push reloading supplies. "get pre-expiring powder now while you still can".

I think this is an urban myth. Here's why...
Let's just entertain the idea that manufacturers could indeed cause ammo to expire after some future date by causing the powder to degrade or whatever. The key word here is degrade (I see no way in which ammo could just magically one day at certain time be rendered useless). So with that in mind, think of all the possible misfires, squib loads, etc. that would possibly plug a bore because of degrading ammo. What manufacturer would open themselves up to the possibility of someone blowing a firearm up because John Doe unknowingly followed a squib with a full power fresh load? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone?
I think it's pure baloney.

Earlier this year, I ran several magazines of 4-year-old Federal Hydrashoks through a Glock 27 with no malfunctions.
