I was wondering about how many CHLers there were in TX. I found the basic stats at http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administra ... aphics.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and compiled them here.

I'll leave it to you to paste into excel and make graphs as you see fit. The most curious thing I am wondering about is what happened to the instructor count in 2006? Likewise the #s for CHLers barley changed between 2003 and 2004.

Encouraging to the the sharp spike in % of previous year from 2006-2007. Can't wait to see how the 2008 #'s look. Hopefully we can expect some 40,000 new brothers and sisters :)

When looking at % of population off some 2006 estimate I found it looks like only ~0.1% of the population has their CHL. I was thinking it would be more.

I was in a meeting with DPS and some other folks this past Monday. We were told that we now have 300,000 CHL and applications are still coming in at a record pace.

The demographic stats are much more interesting than the #'s I initially posted, apparently. Trying to figure out the drop in instructors in 2006 I still can't make any sense of it:

There was 1 suspended, 1 revoked and +1300 issues! How does that result in such a drop? Were there and inordinate amount of people that let theirs just expire?

The percentage of CHL holders is more than 1.4% of the total Texas population (289,000/20,000,000). The percentage of eligible persons is higher. You have to be an adult, over 21 in most cases, a citizen or permanent resident immigrant, and have a clean criminal background, not owe back child support, sane, etc.. That is probably around half the total population.

I guess the number of instructors dropped because some people who got certified as instructors years earlier thought they would make money doing it, and failed to do so.
