I agree, and find this statement of interest:

I wonder if the Harris County Sheriff's office has a "hunter education youth coordinator"?

That's a great idea! I can imagine that some sheriff's departments might be too strapped for resources, and in an area of dense population that might impact their ability to stage something like this.

But I wonder if a variation could be pulled off as a cooperative effort between, say, the TSRA (and/or maybe the nascent Texas CHL Forum, Inc.), FFLs, and local shooting ranges that wish to participate?

I'm sure there would be any number of certified CHL or NRA instructors who would volunteer their time free of charge, I know I would. On the surface, it seems like it might just be a matter of documentation, coordination, and communication...making sure all stakeholders understood their benefits and obligations.

• Dealers would have a little something extra, without cost, they could give buyers as a purchase incentive.
• Ranges would have flexibility to schedule how many and when they want to hold event(s), and the event would bring in new shooters (if they're clever marketeers, I could see 'em giving the folks who show a discount coupon for range time at the next visit).
• Instructors will volunteer their time anyway, but this would be a structured opportunity to let new shooters learn about additional instruction and CHL classes.
• The statewide entity would serve as the coordination point, communicating with FFLs and ranges, recruiting instructors, and providing a reservation mechanism so purchasers can locate a participating range near them and reserve a spot in a class. I'd also think the statewide organization would provide a recommended framework to the instructors for the curriculum. And the statewide organization might offer discounted membership to the buyers who register for this basic class.

Doesn't need to be a grandiose scope to start. I think tying it to Christmas purchases offers some great PR possibilities, but nothing says it couldn't be beta tested on a small scale in one or more limited geographic areas during 2009.

Is there an official Second Amendment Day? I've seen July 22 in some places, and others that tie it to December 15, Bill of Rights Day. Just wondering. A free handgun safety class could also surround July 4 in addition to Christmas.

I don't think Cherokee County has a range for either the Sherrif or the local police departments to practice/qualify on so I guess this safety program won't happen around here. BUMMER!

This is a great idea. There are many individuals buying guns for the first time who have no idea what they are doing....
