My car was almost broken into

I was pretty lucky. I went to my monthly Republican Liberty Caucus meeting tonight. When I left toward the back parking lot where I had parked I found several cars were broken into. The one to the right of me had it's windows smashed out, to the left were the remains of a window from a car I guess they completely jacked and another person from my group had his truck broken into and his work laptop stolen. They apparently tried to break into mine, the lock is all messed up.
They must have been pretty ballsy considering the parking lot was right next to the feeder of a highway.
For those of you in Austin, this was at the CrossRoads complex off 183 & burnet.
God I hate thieves.

Did you report it, and if so, did APD respond? When my next door neighbor got burgled this summer, they told him that they no longer have time to investigate non-commercial property crimes. I wonder if this is still the case.

No, no surveillance that I saw. Didn't think to even really ask about that, I looked around but didn't notice any in the immediate area but there could have been some elsewhere to catch something relevant.
The husband & wife who actually got broken into and had stuff stolen called the cops so I just waited around for them to show up. I was surprised. I figured I'd be waiting around at least a good 30 minutes. In 10 minutes or less there were two units on the scene.

Please don't think you're some kind of vigilante and don't go out of your way to engage criminals.
Edit: And from that description, for all you know it's just a new neighbor.

YOU CAN BE REST ASSURED, ITS ALL BARK AND NO BITE,
IM PROB THE FIRST TO CALL THE POLICE. MY BROTHER WAS A VICTIM OF AN IDIOT WITH A GUN, AND I DO KNOW THE REPERCUSSIONS FOR ANY ACTIONS TAKEN.
I HAVE A BABY ON THE WAY SO IM NOT RISKING MY NECK FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN MY FAMILY.
BUT I AM SURE I CAN PERSUADE JUST ABOUT ANYONE TO DROP WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND LEAVE.

i went to UT austin for my undergrad. When i was there my car got broken into 3 times.
First time was at my apartments
Second was at the dealership, they replaced everything for free and gave me a new stereo system, amps + sub
THird time was at my other apt and they stole all the new stuff the dealer put in.
This was all in the span of the 4-5 yrs i lived there. And they were always mass break in not just my car.

Yep...My son's car was broken into there also. West campus seemed to be a favorite shopping destination for mexican gang bangers.

Like it or not...that is what is happening. I am surprised they brushed for prints. After telling us the area was over run with mexican gangs, they said there was no point in dusting for prints. They told us that even if they catch them, they would get off with a slap on the wrist.

"...a slap on the wrist..."?
That sounds like a management problem! Where are the police and the courts?

Where are the voters?

We were told that it was due to the overflow of prisons and the pressure on courts. The Austin Police said we should just file it with insurance and not worry about it. Plano police gave it the same treatment when it happened on my block. Six of us got hit in the same night. Plano police refused to take fingerprints. They said pretty much the same as Austin police. Nobody cares...as long as the insurance pays up. I will admit it...I didn't care. I got to upgrade my stereo system to the newest model, courtesy of the insurance company.
