I know this may not quite belong here, but I'm taking the CHL course on the 24th of this month, and I absolutely cannot wait to get to that point, much less the application stage. Going to my local range tomorrow to shoot the course of fire again.

I've got 100% confidence in my shooting abilities, but thats the only thing I can think of as far as preparing for the class that I can think of,

I think it's imperative to have the justifications for use of deadly force burned into your brain, because you are not going to be able to look them up when the moment of truth comes.

The written test really doesn't have that many legal questions.

The best advice I can give you is relax. The next is pay attention in class.

The shooting test is easy if you ever shot before. The written test is easy if you stay awake in class.

seamusTX's link is good. My advice is don't worry too much about the administrative rules. Concentrate on the penal code sections because that's what's important in everyday life. Chapters 9 and 46 especially.

Good reading, informative when I can persuade myself to focus on the slight legalese.

Went by Red River Firearms yesterday, and since I signed up for the class two-three weeks ago, the class has completely filled up. 22 are taking the class, including me...and only one of those is a renewal. Thought some on here might be interested in that.

I was up for my 3rd renewal, which has no tests, just paper work. I decided to participate in a class for a refresher with a friend going for his first license. that was the first time I saw anyone fail the written and/or the shooting.

Im amazed at the intelligence level of the humn race these days...


that said, just the fact you can register and post on this forum, shows you're intelligent enough for the test.

I passed with flying colors, as did most of the people in the class. We had 25 people in the class, 2 of which were renewals.

I shot in the first group, we only had 8 lanes available. Out of 50 shots, I had 2 outside the 8 ring.

As far as the test goes, the hardest part about that was waiting to take it. Perfect score, no misses at all. And I was one out of only two in the class that scored 100%.

I was psyched, yet calm, the entire time. On the way there this morning, my stomach was tying itself in knots over the idea of shooting in a pass/fail situation. But I got to thinking, "Heck, I do this once a week anyways, whats the big deal?"

With that in mind I volunteered for the first group to shoot, then took care of all the notarization, fingerprinting, and pictures afterwards. It was a great experience. Really brought a lot of things to attention that previously were hearsay, or he said/she said bull. If for nothing other than the educational value of the class, I'm glad I took it. Definitely worth it.

Also, the guys at Red River Firearms were excellent as always, Johnny-onthespot with any questions or concerns that arose.



There was one guy that failed the shooting course, but they let him retake it and he did ok on the second go around. All in all a good class.

Lasted almost 12 hours all said and done. Due to the size of the class, I guess.

I don't really know what else to say, other than time to clean the .45, watch a movie, and browse the web. I'm too alert to sleep.

Congratulations. You're one step closer. Now remember to mail your application first thing Monday morning.

Way ahead of ya, i'm putting the application together tomorrow.....and like ya said, 1st thing monday, the app is getting sent off.

I just popped in here and saw this and felt I should comment....

Pay attention to the entire book. Not just chapters 9 and 46. Everything is related. Pay particular attention to definitions used by the state.

You'd be surprised at the number of people in Sherman with a CHL. Where I work probably half of the people in my department are CHL's.
