This is not uncommon. Especially with slide type holsters (don't know that's what he was using). It's unfortunate that the gun discharged but lucky no serious injury was inflicted.

I'd like to know the type of gun involved and how dropping it caused the hammer to go off. I'm guessing it was some kind of revolver. Someone please correct me if i'm wrong in this assumption.

Your XD should not do that as they have a mechanism in them to prevent this specific type of discharge. It is one of the saftey features on them.

Most modern revolvers have a hammer block on them as well.

I'm betting a Glock with a lightened trigger spring and a bugger hook on the trigger while trying to grab it!

If we are posting bets, mine would be on a 1911. Although the a Glock with the attempted catch is not unlikely.
Depends on whether it was a finger or the floor that set it off. Funny how the one piece of helpful information is left off the news article.

CENTERVILLE — A man was wounded by shrapnel from a toilet when his concealed weapon accidentally went off while he was using the bathroom, police said.

It happened Tuesday at the Carl's Jr. restaurant at 385 N. 800 West. Police said the 26-year-old man had gone into the bathroom to use the toilet, armed with a .40-caliber Kahr P40 handgun. The man, who has a valid concealed weapon permit and was lawfully in possession of the gun, had it in a holster inside his pants.

"While pulling his pants up the gun fell out of the holster, striking the tile floor," Centerville Police Lt. Paul Child said Wednesday. "When the gun hit the floor, it went off, and the bullet struck the toilet, shattering it and sending sharp pieces of porcelain flying."

The man was hit by some porcelain shards, lacerating his arm. No one else was injured, but an employee of the restaurant in the next-door women's restroom heard the gunshot and panicked.

"She was shaken, she was upset and was complaining of some chest pain," Child said.

The man walked into the restaurant area, holding his wound and asked an employee to call 911. Police and paramedics responded to the call of shots fired inside the restaurant and ended up treating the man for the cuts to his arm. The woman also was treated at the scene.

"In this case it appears that the accident would have been prevented if the man had used a secure holster," Child said. "A good quality firearm also should not fire if it is dropped."

The man was not cited, but police took the firearm for safekeeping while they finish their investigation.

"He was shaken up. We felt it was prudent to secure the firearm," Child said. "He'll be able to have the firearm released back to him."

All 1911's have a thumb safety and a grip safety (some models add a firing pin safety as well).

A properly functioning 1911 should not discharge from a drop...such as described in this event.

For an 1911 to go off when dropped...it would have to be one without a firing pin safety, it would need to hit on the muzzle/slide nearly perpendicular with the floor, and it would have to do so with enough inertia to overcome the firing pin spring. The second way this could happen...would be for the weapon to land on the hammer with enough force to shear both the hammer hooks and sear (unlikely, but not impossible with todays MIM parts).

but even with mim parts highly unlikely. Without the Colt or Swartz FP safeties still a very safe firearm preferred by many.
Myself included.

The lesson that we can all learn is that even though we have holsters accidents can happen and we need to be fully aware at all times and not get complacent with our firearms.

I always considered a carried gun safest secured in the holster with the trigger covered. Much lower risk. I will amend that thought to include "with holster well secured". Don't you know that messed up his day?...and his trip to the bath room.
