Hipower Recoil Spring

I just bought a new 17 lb recoil spring for an FN Hipower from Wolff. I bought this gun used about a year ago and while it has shot just fine, I thought I would replace the recoil spring. When I tried to put the new spring in, I couldn't get it to fit. It was considerably longer than the existing spring. The new one is about 5 1/2 inches long and the old one is about 4 1/4 inches long. Did Wolff send me the wrong spring or is there something I need to do to get the new spring to compress far enough to get into the slide. I would appreciate any help you could give me.

Hello. It sounds like the spring has not yet taken the (expected and planned for) "set". It will be tough to install initially but it should "shrink" a bit after this is done.
Take a look at the FAQ at Wolff's site:
http://www.gunsprings.com/Resources/FAQ.htm#6" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , particular #6 and #8.
They are just tough to get in at first though I've not had a big problem in this regard. I put the spring on the spring guide and then put the front of the spring into the recess at the muzzle end of the slide and push the guide and spring forward and then seat the rear of the guide in the recess at the bottom of the barrel.
Best.

Thanks. I guess I will just keep working at it.
