Police say she was decapitated with a kitchen knife while having coffee with a Chinese doctoral student in a campus cafe Wednesday night.

Around 7 p.m. last night, a Chinese graduate student, believed to be 25-year-old Haiyang Zhu, stabbed to death a female graduate student in the Graduate Center's café on the outskirts of the campus
At about 7:45 p.m., the system sent 40,000 text and e-mail messages to alert students, faculty, and even parents of the attack, according to News Channel 8. The text and e-mail message blast took about 15 minutes to reach every name in its database and told students to stay in place.
WOW!!! This system works GREAT!!!! The instant notification system was activated 45 minutes AFTER they arrested the guy. GREAT system!!!

So, the incident was over about 45 minutes to an hour before people were notified, and it took another hour after that to let them know it had been dealt with? What's the point of the notification anyway?

Looks like they might have some issues with their Chinese exchange students. Once is an anomaly, twice is a coincidence, if it happens a third time it's a trend.

This is another disturbing event. It is just chilling that someone could do something like this to another person.

Notification systems are only useful for long lead time events (e.g., hurricanes) or events of long duration (e.g., hostage situations). They are useless for reducing casualties in sudden violence situations.

This also reminds me of the guy (in Canada?) that stabbed a stranger on a bus and started eating him... Call me jaded, but the only thing that surprises me about the depths of human depravity is that people are still surprised by it.
