This past week at the range we had a shooters M9 (Beretta 92FS) break while firing. This is a pretty common occurrence, its usually one of the locking lugs on the falling locking block.

I attempted to clear the weapon out and found that the slide wouldn't move to the rear, so i finagled (sp?) it until I could get the round out of the chamber and then after some more tinkering was able to disassemble it. I once again found that one of the lugs on the falling locking block had been sheared off, not only that but one set of rails on the frame had also sheared off.

I was surprised at how clean the break was on both parts so I put it back together and did a function check. Everything worked fine as if nothing was wrong!

After all the shooters had finished qualification I took 100 9mm rounds and shot them through the severely broken M9 at a 25 meter target. Not only did all rounds fire but they all were on target.

I was pretty impressed with the fact that it still functioned being so jacked up. Although I was not that impressed that it had a catastrophic malfunction while firing.

Take what you want from my experience, but the M9 is a pretty tough workhorse...even if its broken.

You should probably also know that we fire over half a million 9mm rounds a year through around 100 M9's, so they take a lot of punishment.

They are awesome pistols in my opinion. I guess anything can and will break with excessive wear and use. Glad it wasn't mine though.

There was also some problems with a Beretta 92 at my CHL class.

I guess I should start a "For those thinking about buying a Glock" thread. We were at the range the other day, firing the issued Glock 23's and one completely lost a slide. The slide stop spring broke, the slide stop failed, and the entire weapon came apart. Was a shocking sight. Replaced the spring and we are back in action. Guns are machines, and machines will fail. Sometimes you can forsee the failure and prevent it, sometimes you cant.

Yeah, there was a problem with one in my class, too - it wouldn't miss!

I owned one for almost 20 years and had exactly ZERO problems with it, even though it was a 92F, the early model that was suspected of having defective steel in the slide. VERY accurate, VERY reliable, and shot everything I fed it. My only problem with it is it was hard to conceal, so I got a Beretta 9000S F in 9mm. Same Beretta quality and reliability in a smaller, more easily concealed package. But it's hard to beat the 92.

I wasn't hating on Beretta...or that model. I actually am a fan of the style of the gun. Just that particular specimen wasn't working worth a crap. Due to poor maintenance and cleaning.
