So Obama supports making the AWB permanent. Would it make sense to buy extra's while there's time as a kind of investment to resell? From what I understand it would still be legal to buy/sell/transfer weapons not made before the ban -- or am I incorrect with that assumption to begin with?

I could be wrong on this (hope not), but only time will tell.

Personally, I don't think one is coming at least soon. He has bigger fish to fry. Economy, war, energy, etc.
I also think that they still feel the sting of what happened when Clinton/congress pushed through the 94 AWB.
On top of that, elections in 2 years could really mess up the remaining 2 years of his office if something extraordinarily aggresive were to happen.

I'm not saying it won't happen, just saying I don't think its on the forefront of whats on the task list.

There are several copies of the proposed ban from last year still floating around on the net. Look it up. A lot of things had been changed to make it 'new & improved' over the 94 ban. IIRC, one was that no private sales of currently possessed FA's. I could be wrong on that though. I haven't read it lately. IF that were the case, the investment for resale is not going to fly.

He only made 500+ campaign promises. AWB is just one.

Maybe. Maybe not. Who do you plan to sell them to? From all reports there has been a buying frenzy on ARs and AKs the past several months. Prices in some cases are 50% more than a year ago. Sometimes double. I think the vast majority of people who want a black rifle enough to pay a premium have already got theirs. But I could be wrong.

Maybe. Maybe not. There will be pressure for a new and improved ugly gun ban but there's also a political cost.

If they pass some ugly gun ban, it could include a grandfather clause or simply outlaw possession after some date.

If there's a grandfather clause, it could allow transfers or simply let the owner at the time of the ban keep it.

If it allows transfers, it could require all transfers after the effective date to go through a process similar to NFA transfers.

I agree with you that most people who wanted one have gone out and made their purchase already. There will always be a growing market, however, as a new class of kiddos turns 18 every year. I'm not sure I'd view it as an investment. I bought mine knowing full well that I might not ever be able to sell it. . . I just wanted one.

The gear I've purchased is for the grandkids I don't have yet.

It is an investment but more of the long term variety.

I think it would have been a good investment if you had purchased the rifles 6 months ago but now with prices so inflated it would be difficult to turn a profit. If the AWB doesn't pass then your sitting on some very over priced guns which is ok if you also bought the guns because you enjoy shooting them. I would not buy for investment purposes only.

you're a little late to the party if you want to "invest" in AR-15s now. you could have bought stripped lowers for $99 in Aug and Sept. but around Oct when people started really panic buying the price went up and probably won't go back down for some time.

not only that. but good luck finding an AR now. stripped lowers and complete rifles are on a 2-3month back order and that is conservative estimate. i think some AR builders are on a 3-6 month backlog.

AR mags prices have gone insane. you use to be able to buy Magpul PMags for $15 ...now they are $30+.

I saw many ARs at the last gun show at the Will Rogers center that were not priced higher than I saw them 6 months ago.

I picked up 2 receivers (stripped) for 99 each and now those are 199+, so I did see a move there.

I have to say that Obama is going to do something, but when and how bad is the question.

I haven't got mine yet. I want to get one soon, but to be honest, I'm still learning about what I should get. It's new to me.

I don't consider any of my guns as an "investment" in the economic sense. I plan on keeping them and eventually passing them on to my son.

I didn't buy either of mine as a financial investment. I bought them for the use they were designed for - if it ever comes to that. Call it an investment in the future of my country, if you want, but they are not now, nor will they ever be, for sale. And if it ever comes to the point where we are required to surrender them, well . . . . Texas is a big state, PVC pipe, plastic bags, and cosmoleen are cheap . . . . Oh, and, "I sold them to some guy who was passing through. No, I saw his ID. He was over 18, but I don't remember his name. Was it Jack... John... James? I can't remember."
