Bonus for experienced police officers. Bilingual in Spanish a plus. Nothing herein about free lift tickets, but those things usually work themselves out. If I was a cop, this is where I'd be. No more urban lows and woes, dead bodies on the north side, more dead bodies on the south side. Nothing but one giant Rocky Mountain high punctuated with a few confused drunks who can't find their way back to their hostel, an occasional shoplifter and old hippies camping on public property.

Yeah, but you better check on what your annual salary is or you aren't gonna be able to afford to live there.

We spend our summers in a poorer part of the San Juans and drove through Aspen as 'lookey-loos' last summer. Judging from the real estate brochures AND the number of private jets tethered at the Aspen airport, I reckon the rent is quite high. We didn't see any single or double-wides either. :leaving

That looks great, but the thought of a ski lift makes me a little sick to my stomach...LOL. Not the place for someone scared to death of heights.

I prefer warm liquid water to cold solid water so Aspen is not a place I want to live or vacation, but I think there must be moderately priced apartments somewhere in the area for all the maids, waiters, police, ski lift operators, and other people serving the tourists and wealthy residents.

If you go to the Aspen PD website, I think it says something about rent controlled housing. The town has fostered building some worker oriented housing complex recently in addition to five million dollar 1200 square ft. condos. But there is a warning to check out the housing situation before you apply. Aspen, CO is one of the few towns in the U.S. where people will do almost anything to stay once they get there. Taos, NM is another.

any place that has to advertise for applicants for public service employees, leo, firefighter, other first responders, probably can't (or won't) properly compenstae them. There is no Utopia!

Maybe not, but I'll bet this is close. ;-)

Did you notice the part about leaving the WranglerS at the airport? I'm tellin' ya', this is a high rent district... as in where the rich and famous play.

and, as in where the cost of living would put most "public servants" in the lower end of the spectrum, particularly if salaries are based on some statewide factoring

I had a friend who spent a year or so in Aspen in the 80's and he told me that there was public housing for the people there who actually did the work. Grocery clerks, firemen, police, waiters, etc. Basically the "infrastructure folks" had to have housing supplied. He didn't mention rent controlled but just said it was public housing because that was the only way he could live there.

Personally, I can't see how anyplace can be so nice that I would want to live in "slave quarters" just so I can serve the royalty.

I'll stay in Houston and pay my own way thank you very much.

This post reminds me of how I got a bunch of reloading equipment for cheap. A guy at work put an ad in our company newsletter that he was selling some reloading equipment. I met with him and he told me that he was stationed in Hawaii while he was in the Navy and it was so beautiful he wanted to move back there to live. He was selling all of his possessions so he and his wife could move. I got a great deal on a whole lot of reloading equipment.

About six months later I saw him at work and said, "I thought you moved to Hawaii." He said, "I did, but it was so expensive I couldn't afford to live there." I felt bad for him.

Now that I look back on it, it's pretty funny. He had to move back to California, because he couldn't afford to live in Hawaii.
