Interesting article in the Dallas Morning News about a dog attacking another dog. Owner pulls a knife and injures the other owner. Probably missing some facts, but it might be a good one to follow.

The guy's lucky that the lady who got cut up is not only not pressing charges, but also offering to pay for the medical bills of his dog. Wow, animal lover and taking personal responsibility. :cheers2:

Alright everybody try this one on:

You are walking your dog through this "park", minding your own business, with your CCW under your shirt. Out of the blue, a pit bull, dragging its master/mistress, charges you and begins to kill your dog.

Who do you shoot?

.... No one? You spray the dog with OC
I don't carry OC.

Shoot the dog.

Two attackers? Pepper spray and/or shoot both!

I am a veterinary technician who has devoted 10 years of my life to helping sick and injured animals. I LOVE dogs. My dog is almost the most important thing in my life. Rides my Harley with me, goes on the ski boat, sleeps in my bed, does all sorts of cool tricks, etc......

I would not hesitate in shooting ANY dog that was "killing" my dog regardless if its a Pitbull or not. I am willing to accept any legal or financial responsibility/trouble that comes afterwards too even if I have to surrender my CHL.

This is a very real world situation. I have had dogs attack my dog once twice when walking, and seen another attack. I'm not worried about "normal" dogs, but one park has a penchant for pit bulls with bad owners. inevitably its the pit bull that is loose that is a problem. You can't just kick off a pit bull generally.

That is indeed one reason I now have a CHL.

Kinda' makes you wonder why anyone living in, or near civilization, would want a pit bull or a chow, etc.... doesn't it? :headscratch

Well I was given a puppy pit by someone who actually thought they were giving me a baby labrador, so have some familiarity. Pits have the problem of:

1. Owners. Most owners treat them poorly. They act like they are the canine equivalent of a cheap pearl handled revolver-something to show off how 'bad" they are. Properly trained and socialized they can be just fine. Having said that a good owner can really train one properly to be well behaved and a good/friendly animal.

However:

2. Inbreeding. Inbreeding is a problem in the breed and has created a lot of nut job dogs and very aggressive dogs by instinct.

3. Most pits are pretty muscular and can both escape easily and do a lot of damage that other dogs can’t. As importantly, and I’ve not seen this as much with rottweilers, but I’ve never seen a pit bull that wasn’t an escape artist. My own had the ability to leap over a fence from a standing position, dig under a fence in two minutes, or literally charge through a fence.

4. They really are stubborn as nails. Other animals you can drive off easily but I’ve seen pits take boards, boots, and other assorted items to attempt to get them off. I still remember pictures of a pit that latched onto an animal control officer and they were beating the snot out of it but it wouldn’t let go.

Desire plus ability means a high likelihood of them getting out. Combined with a natural disposition to attack other animals and poor training and you’ve a bad recipe there.

Oddly enough, Pit-Ridges are common up here, from folks thinking they'd make a good Hog-dog...idiots... The pit-ridge tends to incorporate the best parts of both breeds--the hound qualities of a Ridgeback, and the human-bonding of pits. And yes, I happen to help with a Rescue group dedicated to Ridgebacks, and they get a lot of pit-ridges from places like the Gainesville shelter, where the hog-dog breeders dump them,'cause 'this dog won't hunt!'
