Hello,

This is just my second post so here I am:

I'll be going in vacation to Florida, driving on I-10. We are staying in the area called Beaches of South Walton near Destin in a Town House (very nice area).

I don't have my CHL yet, just submitted the papers. What would you carry/take for your protection when going in vacation to the beach, travelling by car?

No CHL - you could maybe get away with a shotgun or any long gun.

I'd probably bring a shotgun if I was that worried about it.

With all of that interstate travel - I would suggest that any gun at all could be problematic. Think a folding pocket knife or pepper spray.

Thank you all for your postings. I already got OC spray for me and my wife and I'll take a pocket knife as well.

It did cross my mind to take my 870 Marine Magnum to have it the room but besides the legal issues I am also concerned with having it stolen ...

For those interested in the legality of having a long gun in the car while traveling from TX to FL:
TX: ok, can be loaded.
LA: no law in the books regarding car/traveling. The assumption is that since is not banned is legal. However I see LA in the grey area.
MS: acording to the law one can carry a firearm inside a vehicle.
AL: must be unloaded and secured or in the trunk.
FL: can be loaded but must be secured in a holster or case, zipped case is ok.

So I guess AL and FL renders it pretty useless in the trunk or case so I decided not to take the shotgun. Beaches of South Walton is not Miami :).

Unless you have a CHL, then Fla. is carry.......

I traveled to Florida before I got my CHL and carried two hand guns with me. The only state you might have a problem with is Alabama. Just drive nice and easy through that state and you should have no problems. You are in Alabama for only 70 or so miles anyways. If not just stop and lock it up.

In LA, MS, and FL you can have a hand gun in your car without a CHL.

For Louisiana:
(Implies that a firearm contained entirely within a motor vehicle is in a constitutionally protected area and can not be regulated by the state. Our State Constitution only specifically gives the Legislature the power to regulate the concealed carry of weapons. (So anyone can carry a loaded firearm inside a motor vehicle in LA.)
They see your car as an extention of your home.

For Mississippi:
(It shall not be a violation of this section for any person over the age of eighteen (18) years to carry a firearm or deadly weapon concealed in whole or in part within the confines of his own home or his place of business, or any real property associated with his home or business or within any motor vehicle.)

For Florida:
(It is not necessary to have a license or permit to carry a loaded firearm in a private vehicle, so long as the gun is "securely encased". Florida law defines a weapon as being securely encased if the firearm is in a glove compartment, whether or not locked, in a snapped holster (not worn on your body!), in a zippered gun case or in a box or other container that requires a lid or cover to be lifted or opened in order to gain access to the firearm.)

I'll be driving to Orlando for vacation next month. Only state that I see I'm not covered is Alabama. I've sent off the NH application today. It's probably too late, but worth a try. If I don't get it in time, I'll just unload and lock it up at the back of the vehicle.

Depending on exactly when you leave you may get it. If I remember right it took mine about three weeks to arrive.

That's what I'll be foing when we go to Georgia later this month. I am not getting the NH CHL. I don't travel enough for it to be worth the cost. I know it's cheap, but I'll spend the money on ammo.

I'm leaving on the 2nd, but knowing Kinny luck, I won't get it on time.

Double check it, but seems I recall that CCW may be required for OC in Florida.

Last I heard, no law against vehicle carry of super-sized can of hornet/wasp spray.
