Interesting encounter tonight

No, i was not shaking or sweating. :-)

I live in an apartment complex that has actual security checking/recording everybody coming in. I was home late but my wife was even later and it got dark very quickly. I called her and knew she's on the way (10 min), then I sat down in front of my computer to check emails etc.

About this time, I heard a somewhat loud noise from my blinder on a half open window from the dark living room. I didn't pay much attention because I thought it's just wind. Suddenly someone started to knock my door. I thought my wife's back but didn't hear her car alarm or her foot step, so i looked through the peep hole and asked who that was. A guy answered that his cat got into my apartment through the window.

"How interesting!" I thought, "They use anything to make your open the door nowadays, but that's a nice and original one I would use." I told him to hold on then went to put on a pair of pants, my carry gun, and my Maglite flash light - that's actually a club.

I didn't open the door until I actually cornered the cat after searching every room for a while. A girl and a guy were standing outside when I handed over the cat - cute cat, but never seen them before - i have been there a long time.

I am very happy about how I handled everything but my wife says i am a little overreacting. *wink.

Oh, one thing i must note. I actually worried about more about my room being seen as messy than the two standing outside - didn't even pay attention to them much such as how they looked, what they wore or what they had in their hands. hmm, lesson learned.

I am very weary when ANYONE knocks on my door if I am not expecting company. I have two large dogs that are not shy about protecting their home so they are a good deterrent to start with. Anyone that knows me and has been to my house know to call before coming EVERY TIME. So when someone knocks on my door that was not expected I make my way to the door with a gun in hand. I did have a girlfriend at one point in time that gave me a lot of grief about this, but she is no longer in my life and I stuck by my guns, literally. Protecting yourself and your family is always number one in any situation. Good move on your part, you can never be too careful.

I agree. I live in an apartment complex and I am VERY weary when someone knocks on my door.

Good Job.

I would be wary, rather than weary (most of the time)

Even if I found the cat in my apartment I'd still be pretty cautious. I mean, most BG are stupid, but some of them are tricky.

Did you see that episode of Homeland Security a couple weeks ago where they called backup to capture the cat?

Yeah, but did you see how bad that dude got torn up trying to get it out from under the counter? I think they were smart to call for backup on that wildcat!

I am the exact same way. Folks that know me are very much aware I don't like the "pop-in". If I am not expecting someone I always go to the door with gun in hand. I don't always answer with the gun in my hand. Sometimes it's local kids selling GS cookies, band camp candy or such. Don't want to scare off my junk food suppliers  .

It's a good thing your wife didn't come home and find a strange cat in the house. She would be questioning your situational awareness
