IMPERIAL BEACH — A woman who interrupted a burglar inside her apartment was shot in the stomach with her own gun during a struggle late Thursday morning, sheriff's deputies said.

The woman told deputies she heard a noise in the living room of her apartment on Elder Avenue, near Third Street, about 11:40 a.m. and she armed herself with a gun before checking on the noise.

The 21-year-old woman found a man tampering with her home entertainment system, deputies said. She and the burglar struggled over the handgun and she was shot in the stomach, deputies said.

The woman, who called 911 for help as the burglar ran away, was taken to a hospital and her condition was not released.

Deputies said they searched the area for the burglar but he was not found.

The woman's husband was at work at the time.

Deputies said they are investigating the shooting as part of an interrupted hot-prowl burglary – a burglary in which a resident is at home at the time a burglar sneaks inside.

The woman's gun was recovered, deputies said.
You must me mentally prepared and willing to fire! When the moment comes this is not the time to do your soul searching or second guessing.

If I happen to find a burglar in my house, (that my dog hasn't torn to shreds) the ONLY shound he will hear is my gun going off.....and that is if he is lucky. I have no desire to shoot anyone and even less desire to give him a chance to get my gun from me. He will be DRT.

She fired one shot and the burglar ran away. Hopefully our aim will be better.

I guess I'm going to cut the poor lady some slack. After all, she lives in California. Who knows what would have happened had she actually shot the robber. I wouldn't be surprised if she receives some kind of citation for illegal firearm possession or un-warranted threat with a firearm.

I sure hope the firearm was incapable of holding more than 10 rounds or she's really in trouble.
