Saw a classified in the newspaper yesterday wherein an individual was selling some long guns and handguns. I was really interested in the Ruger SP101 (new) for $300. My question is what procedure do you all use when buying a firearm from an individual you don't know? Do you ask to see the sellers DL, ask for a receipt or just play it by ear?

I would do two things;

1. Ask the individual to provide you enough time to get the serial number of the pistol so you can call the local police and verify it is not stolen.

2. Get a bill of sale from the individual including DL number.

Chances are if he advertised int the paper he is legit and just doesn't have or know of other means to sell the firearms.

Get a look at his DL and get a feel for the guy. I have bought several firearms individuals and I have backed out of a deal cause I didn't like the way the guy acted. Just have as much communication beforehand as possible and see if he will meet at a police station or sheriff dept. If he is sketchy that will not be a place he will want to meet.

I have bought a lot of guns from individual over the years, and no problems yet.
I prefer to deal with CHL holders, which makes it a no-brainer.

Otherwise, I just keep a record of contact info, emails etc.

Most of the time, initial contacts are through emails. If the seller does not sign emails, doesn't respond fully, then I don't pursue.
The upright guys seem to have their full name on their emails, and additional information, and communicate promptly and completely.

When I'm buying or selling, I try to project that image and set the other party at ease.
I expect them to reciprocate.

I am paranoid about buying or selling anything face to face these days, gun or otherwise. It seems like every time you turn around you hear about somebody getting set up or robbed in these transactions. This is not to say I wouldn't do it, but I would be very cautious and only meet in a very public place in very day light conditions. The police station parking lot sounds like a great idea. That would only make a crook nervous. Anyone on the level would welcome the idea for their own safety.

I am not as concerned if I make the contact through a sight such as this one where you can see a person has history. I sold a handgun to a feller on this sight and it went perfect. I met him in a Mickey D's parking lot, but did not feel it was as risky as a newspaper add or even worse...Craigs list. Craigs list is hazardous to your health.

Maybe I've been lucky, but I've met a lot of nice people that way.
Only a couple were less than great, but none were worrisome.

I buy and sell and never had any problems. I trust my gut and won't deal if it feels hinky. If somebody asks too many questions I pass on the deal. I also had a bad experience where someone passed on a deal after I held it over a week, so I won't do that anymore. Cash talks.

Thanks for the info folks. I'll remember this info for the future. In this case the individual never answered the phone. I really did want that SP101 for $300 if it was in fact new as advertised.

When they don't answer the phone that usually means they have been deluged with phone calls and they realize they priced it too cheap. So they lie low for a few weeks. Look for it to be relisted at $400

Jump quick if you see a deal you want. Sometimes I see ads online marked SPF within an hour of posting. You snooze you lose.
