So a friend who owed me a couple hundred bucks convinced me that his SKS (which was missing the entire trigger assembly) was worth the $200 he owed me. I might have gotten taken advantage on this, but it seemed reasonable at the time. No rust, came with 500 rounds, etc. Either way I need to find a trigger assembly so I can see if the gun will actually shoot.

The problem is that after an hour or so of Googling and a couple calls to gunsmiths (including Dury's in SA), I'm still not sure I can get what I need. The closest thing I've found was either a trigger group without the safety or one that claimed it wouldn't fit the Chinese SKS because it uses AK mags.

So any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's not worth what they are asking though IMO...I see these at gun shows occasionally for a lot less.
Looks like you may have to eat a little on this deal. Anything AK, SKS or AR has gone through the roof.

BTW, Your pics look like you are missing the magazine too. Perhaps it's just not in the pics?

I don't feel too bad as far as the trade goes because I doubt I would have ever gotten cash out of him anyway. At least this way I have something.

Oooops! I missed that part about the missing safety.

If you got the ammo too, I guess you didn't get burned too bad. That trigger group and mag will set you back though. I bet you can find an aftermarket mag easier than an original, and most of the aftermarkets can be removed where the originals can't without removing the trigger group. The originals are unloaded by dumping the bottom half of the mag, kind of like a floorplate on a bolt action.

In case anyone cared: I ended up ordering the part from http://www.apexgunparts.com for $80. When I got it, it had a safety on it, but wouldn't fire. I took it to a gentleman out in Wimberley who I met at the gun show in San Antonio and he fixed it and got me a bayonet. I also grabbed some 30rd magazines at the gun show.

So all's well that ends well, and now I have an SKS.

If you don't mind a couple of questions.

I'm curious about two things relative to your replacement trigger group assembly.

First, does it have a serial number?

Second, is it compatible with replaceable magazines or does it support only fixed magazines. I assume it is not the fixed magazine configurations since you mentioned you bought some 30 round mags.

I looked at the dealer site and it didn't mention either. Picture looks like replaceable mag version.

Oh, congrats on getting your SKS working. I have two Chinese models and they both shoot great.

So it doesn't use AK mags but SKS mags? Since you were not the one who converted it to use detachable mags you should be good legally. I would recommend you get a 5 or 10 round mag for it if you ever plan on using it to hunt or have to carry it very far. The big ones are fun but they get heavy and in the way if you’re doing anything but standing around. $280 is a good deal for an SKS these days. I have a Chinese I bought around 93 that I paid $89 for. I wouldn't sell it even knowing I would make a profit. Best "Hog" gun I have ever had.

I really have no idea, I was told that AK mags and SKS Mags are the same thing by the guy who sold me the mags. They work just fine.

Fangs, an SKS-m or SKS-D model takes real AK mags--no duckbill projection on the front. The SKS mags that have the duckbill piece on the front of the mag will not fit an AK.

I have some of both. Both fit. Though the duck billed sks-specific mags seem to be slightly too narrow on the top to where the bullets won't come out easily. I was thinking of just filing down the front. I'll see if I can get a pic up.

Would an SKS not designed for using the AK mags cause them to occasionally fall out when firing? This started happening after about 50 rounds.

EDIT: Ok, upon further inspection, one of the two duck billed mags works fine. The other one can't seem to cycle more than one bullet without jamming. It seems like the front lip grabs the tip of the bullets and keeps them angled down instead of up so they can load. I'll file it down and see if that fixes it.
