My family owns a vacation/rental cabin in Southeastern Oklahoma. Recently, over the last few days, 8 cabins have been robbed. The doors have been kicked in, or windows busted out, and TV's and other high-dollar items were stolen. The development our cabin is in has not been affected yet, but we're less than a mile up the highway.

These cabins are usually unoccupied, as they are rental cabins. We are debating adding a security camera to hopefully catch anyone that might target our cabin.

Anyone have any suggestions? Would a game camera be the best bet? I usually overdo things, so my vote goes to a PC installed in the owner's supply closet, connected to the internet, and uploading still images whenever it detects motion - that way, the computer could get stolen, but our security images won't be lost.

If we buy a game camera, obviously it needs an infrared flash as to not intrude on our cabin renters that are there legitimately. It also needs long battery life since we only make it up there every couple/few months. It needs user installable memory cards so we have plenty of storage capacity.

Any suggestions? Anyone done anything like this before in a similar situation?

If you are planning to put a camera inside, you may be violating privacy laws when someone rents the property unless the camera is removed.

It wouldn't be mounted inside the cabin - only outside.

When people drive into the subdivision, there is a sign mounted along the road that says "Surveillance Cameras In Use". I think that's sufficient notification from a legal standpoint, but I'm not really sure.

I've seen those internet cameras before - forgot about those! They don't even need a computer, so that's a definite bonus.
