First time shooing a .50 cal

I shot a .50 cal rifle this weekend. That thing was much more than I was expecting. You know, .40, .45, it's just another .05 up, right?. While correct it's still in a league of it's own. That thing is a cannon. Even standing back while others were at the firing line I was blasted with a shockwave every time the trigger was pulled.

They are very powerful but a whole lot of fun to shoot.

Great contrast between the box of .22's and the size of a round of .50 cal !

Where did you get to shoot it? I'd like to try one even though I could never convince the little lady that I need one. :grumble

Awesome. I was 17 the first time I fired a .50 BMG. Somehow the little sponge earplugs just didn't do the trick. As you describe, the blast was very impressive. Still get a cherge from that cartridge! :thumbs2:

That is definitely on my list of guns to buy when I have the money for it. :thumbs2:

Is there an easy way to get to fire one?

This was during ATF Day in Columbus, TX. It was organized by the Austin Young Republicans with the help of the Texas Historical Shooting Society.

If you really "needed one" you'd have larger problems, lol. Explain to your lady how Jay Leno doesn't "need" 100 cars, yet he does because he can.

Great post - thanks!

Reminds me of my uncle's .50 cal black powder. I was 11. My cousin decided to double pack the thing on my first time ever shooting it. Number 1, it weighed a thousand pounds to me. I still have no idea if the ball ever left the barrel. It moved me back about 10 feet and the earth grabbed me by the butt and held me tight. In my mind, I can see the ball dropping to the ground. Left a HUGE bruise on my shoulder to boot. But I will never, ever forget the BOOM when that sucker when off. I have gotten into the hobby of BP pistols now but would never do that to someone, expecially a kid.

There I go again, confusing wants and needs.
Wish I had know about the event beforehand.
