Glad to be carrying my .45 this morning

This morning I was taking one of my dogs for a walk around the neighborhood as I do every morning. I was almost home, but on the opposite side of the street from my house when I saw a boy and dog coming down the street towards me (they were on the opposite side of the street). Dog didn't have a leash on. I asked the boy if it was his dog, he shook his head no. But the dog was obviously following him. He said the dog had growled at him!
I looked more closely at the dog and realized it was 'the dog'. The dog that I've had 2 close calls with in the past year. And it was in my yard. I told the kid to be very careful around that dog and that the dog was violent and had attacked my dog before. At that point the dog was more interested in me and my dog and stopped following the kid. The kid went on to school, and I yelled at the dog to go home enough times that he turned around and went back towards his house. Was glad to have helped the kid out, but knew the dog running around was bad news and called 911 once I got in my house. They sent animal control out pronto. Animal control caught up with the dog down the street and made sure the dog made it home. They ticketed the resident (my neighbor 3 houses down).
I know I could handle the dog, but with the number of small children running around our neighborhood and the fact that the dog gets loose regular basis... the situation is pretty bad. The neighbor said they would be moving the dog out, but it hasn't happened yet.
