Local break-in and HPD comment

This story has a bit of a set-up, but I'll get to the point eventually.

Our neighbors were spending spring break down at their property in Galveston. One of the neighbor kids got a call from one of her 'friends' who told her the back door of her house was open. Now mind you, this kid had no reason to be hanging around her house. She came back from Galveston with some of her teenage friends and asked my daughter to meet them at the house (my daughter had a house key to feed their cats while they were gone). This gaggle of teen girls then go to investigate (without any adult supervision - I was at work and I don't think my wife knew about the open door - just that the girl wanted in). Sure enough, the back door was unlocked. When they went in, they surprised two juveniles in the act of robbing the house. The perps ran off, but had been easily identified since they got to school with most of the witnesses. Even more surprising, one of the robbers was the one who called and said the door was opened!

After the screaming subsided, they managed to call 911. This was about 9 pm. It took several more phone calls, both to 911 and the Houston PD non-emergency number (which more often than not disconnected the call) to finally get an officer out to take the report at MIDNIGHT.

Now for the part I thought was interesting. The officer made the comment that if you knew how many CHL permit holders there were in this neighborhood, you'd have to be crazy to break in here. It struck me as very strange that the police patrolling an area would have information about the CHL demographics.

I was glad to see that I was in good company. I guess I should go ahead and start the Pineloch Gun and Knife Club!

Every resident of the house could be armed to the teeth but if the criminals know the residents are out of town...

Find out how many CHL holders are in your zipcode!

That's the extent of easily available "Neighborhood" demographics that I know of.

Interesting useless fact: Grand prarie (75052) seems to be the zipcode with the highest numeric CHL's. The data is pretty useless unless you can cross reference with total population per zipcode though.

Thanks for the link - I didn't know that data was out there.

http://www.city-data.com/ gives population figures for a given area (2000 census and 2007 estimates). Someone could have a lot of fun doing CHL incidence calculations!

Thanks, there's a lot of interesting information there; for example by age: the interest increases during the earning years, peaks during the "I/we earned it years" and tapers off as we head to boot hill. I guess that is as it should be?

There is only one issue with this, it only shows how many were issued in the period for the report. It does not show how many there are currently licensed by zipcode.

A "friend" once told me that if he was me, he'd carry a gun, and that has what to do with League City... :biggrinjester:

I tried to let it go, cause I'm not real crazy about where I am exiled, but this zip code 77573 had 342 issued 75052 had only 290 issued. for a very distant 2nd place.

290-? LOL, I think you live in my ex-wifes zip. I keep trying to convince her to get a CHL with no luck so far.

Wow, 25 CHL holders 90+ old. My zip code has the largest number of CHL holders. The number should go up by one, once I receive mine (hopefully soon)

I was thinking the same thing! I guess we can go through the archives and see how many, but that won't take into consideration who has moved, died, revokations.... etc.

I'd like to see the number of CHL per zipcode. I know the state knows, since we have to keep our addresses up to date.

All the officer has to do is ask.
GC 9411.178. NOTICE TO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT. On
request of a local law enforcement agency, the department shall notify
the agency of the licenses that have been issued to license holders
who reside in the county in which the agency is located.

A point many seem to ignore.

The thing I get a kick out of is the number of out of Texas apps.
