"She says she only suggested the thought of gun education to help get House Bill 48 passed. The bill would require universal background checks and ban private handgun sales."
I think this is a misquote and she is in fact against this bill.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE UNDER FIRE FOR GUN SAFETY IDEA.
By Lisa Fielding
WBBM, Newsradio 780
State Representative Annazette Collins found herself in the hot seat after she suggested that kids be educated about guns. She says downstate, children are educated about weapons at a young age....why not in more urban areas.
"Down state they teach you that guns are meant for hunting, for protection..here in the urban cities, all they see are guns on tv..and they gun down people." said Collins.
She says she only suggested the thought of gun education to help get House Bill 48 passed. The bill would require universal background checks and ban private handgun sales.
But the majority of people who attended a town hall meeting in Garfield Park were opposed to the plan.
""Teaching kids about guns in the classroom is absurd." said resident Randall Blakey.
"That's like saying we might as well sell drugs legally..we don't want access to guns. We have children dying in this city. We're talking about teaching gets kids in grammar school how to shoot guns? That's crazy." said Father Michael Pflager of St. Sabina Church.
Collins says education is the key and taking a hands on approach would take away the mystery and allure of guns.

Here's a pro-RKBA report:

Here's a video that I can't watch right now:

FWIW, Rep. Collins is a black Democrat from a district on the west side of Chicago that, unless it has changed since I lived there, is virtually 100% black.

If he thinks teaching gun safety is crazy, I'll bet he really hates the thought of sex education and planned parenthood?

I watched it and apparently, the area's demographics are as you remember them. The opposition was the same old idiocy; i.e., "guns kill people". IMO, the congresswoman has more brains than her constituency...a lot more. Bless her heart for trying.

"Father" Michael Pflager is a rabid anti-gun activist.

Is this the honky priest type guy who is such big buddies with the not so reverend Jeremiah Wright; the socialist who preached where the POTUS used to go to church for 20 years but where the POTUS didn't recall Wright's anti-American rantings?
Is this a small world or what?

There are some REALLY STRANGE conspiracy theories in some African American communities about the NRA and gun availability in general.
My basic understainding of the issue is basically this:
In their eyes, it's a type of racism that guns are available, it's some kind of "plan" to make guns available to African American kids so they'll kill each other.
I was on a liberal minded talk show as a call in guest and heard the host specifically say this, which pretty much blew the circuit breaker in my mind.
If we're ever going to help educate people about the truth about guns, we'll have a LOT of work ahead of us in that community.

Yeah, there's a lot of work to be done in the black community. The first step is not to paint the entire community in one broad brush stroke because not all of us live the hip hop lifestyle and not everyone walks in lock-step with “Demonrats.” Most of us know this but, I can’t tell you how irritating it is to hear someone say “You’re not like other black people…” It’s as absurd as saying, “Wow, you mean not every white guy thinks I'm a monkey or want's to hang me from a tree!?”
Fact is, most of the older black folks (especially those who grew up in the south prior to the 1960s) don’t have a problem with guns. In fact, most of those folks share the same beliefs with respect to guns as those of us on this board. Sometimes their kids do too. The problem we as the shooting community face, regardless of race, is that the mainstream media has largely controlled the public’s perception of guns for almost anyone born after 1970.
On the subject of conspiracy theories, the specific theory discussed in this thread is rooted in South-Central LA where gunshops were very common in some of the worst areas of town as gangs were on the rise and were becoming heavily armed. I’d rather not get into a lengthy on that subject but the bottom line is, the folks who believe in these conspiracies are the same people who think crack was introduced to black neighborhoods by the CIA. Yes both theories are absolutely absurd but, part of the reason they persist is because there is circumstantial evidence to support those theories and no one has ever seriously addressed them. To complicate matters, there is such a long standing distrust of the government in the black community that just about logical response from a government official will likely be assumed to be a lie. Some might be willing to listen to BHO but, he's obviously not on OUR side and guys like me will say we know he’s lying because his lips are moving.

So what's wrong with that?
Hey, Chicago outlawed the possession of a handgun in their city. And look how safe it is to live there now.

Well, the gub'mint planted the aid virus in the black community to snuff them out and that plot failed, so the guns were Plan B. Judging by the national news, it seems to be working well.
