I've carried guns in the USVI, legally.
Of course I was in the US Navy at the time.

My dad ran a resort there for several years in the early to mid nineties. He was assaulted in the parking lot of his own hotel by three guys, I was approached in an aggressive manner once (looking back I realize I was being sized up for a mugging or assault), my sister has been harrassed there, and racism against whites is rampant (I once waited in line at the grocery store while every single islander behind me was called up to the register ahead of me [kind of interesting to experience it from the other side]). If there is ever any sort of problem between a white person and an islander it will always be the islander who comes out ahead.....ALWAYS! Maybe that's the way it should be. My dad used to always say (he worked his entire carreer in the caribbean) "they live here, no matter how long we stay we are still just visiting."
My mom always hated living there, mostly for the reasons listed, but also because of expenses and availability of regular items. Whenever I went to visit during those 6-8 years I had to bring an extra suitcase full of stuff like notebook paper, grill parts, eyeglass repair kits, shoes, good paper towels.
Everyone thinks it would be great to live on a tropical island, but they only know it 1 week at a time.
Just thought you might like some inside info
PS...I forgot to ask...which island? St Croix was always very dangerous, very high poverty and crime; St Thomas (where my parents lived) was better, but not utopia either; st john is small, and mostly tourist based, so quite peaceful.
