you can now carry concealed in your car/truck without a chl. i wanted opinions on this matter. is it a bad idea? i know the law has changed (sept.2007)which makes it legal, but i guess i have been conditioned to think its a bad thing.i am waiting to get the plastic and i dont want to do anything to put that at risk. so let me know how you feel -wait for plastic or dont worry about it?

Why in the world would it be a bad idea?

Carry in your car and don't worry about it.
The motorist protection act has been around long enough that all law enforcement should be up to date.

It shouldn't matter which county. This Travis/Harris county thing is old news, and was overblown even during the Terroristoic Rosenthal Regime.
There are some special conditions I would be concerned about while carrying without a CHL. beware of School property, and breaking any laws if you are caught breaking any laws other than class C traffic violations you could find yourself also facing unlawful carry charges.

Would that actually matter? The op asked about carrying in his car so unless he planned to drive his car into the school building, he would be fine. My understanding is that you can have a gun in your car in a school's parking lot. Or am I mistaken and it's only a CHL that have a gun in a school's parking lot?

Parking lot is good to go for all legally carrying (both under CHL and/or MPA).

I say go for it. I've been carrying in the car for about 8 months now, pulled over twice during that period (possibly speed related

), and no issues. I don't recommend mentioning the firearm to the peace officer, as that is not required (without CHL) and might only lead to grief.

It violates Federal law. I think it's unconstitutional just like the ban in federal parks, COE land/lakes, the District of Columbia, etc. but it's worth knowing the law. Especially if you're going to engage in civil disobedience.

What violate's federal law? Having a gun in your car in a school's parking lot?
At my recent CHL class, our instructor (a LEO) said we can have a gun in our car in the parking lot. Was that just for a CHL then?

CHL and LEO. And CHL only if it's issued by the state where the school is located.

Thanks for clarifying that. Even though I don't have any "current" intention to carry concealed when I get my CHL, I decided to get it just for such cases to ensure I'm covered. E.g, if I go to the shooting range and want to pick up my kids afterwards, I don't have to worry about having a gun in the car.
