A robber who walked into the Columbia downtown Alcoholics Anonymous center, pulled out a gun and demanded money was killed (stopped) in a burst of gunfire from an AA visitor’s gun, police said.

“Gimme what you got,” witnesses quoted the robber as saying when he entered the AA building at 2015 College St. in Five Points about 10:48 p.m. Saturday. They said he brandished a .25-caliber handgun.

At that point, as one AA visitor dropped something on the floor — possibly his wallet — another AA visitor pulled out his own pistol and shot the robber “multiple times,” police said.

Columbia police reported that an 18-year-old man who attempted an armed robbery of an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting late Saturday night at the ACOA Club at 2015 College St. in Five Points was shot and killed (stopped) by someone in the meeting who police say carried a legally concealed handgun.

Kayson Helms, 18, of Edison, N.J., was pronounced dead at Palmetto Health Richland at 11:24 p.m. Saturday.

Helms was identified by Richland County Coroner Gary Watts. His office notified the next of kin.

An autopsy Sunday showed bullets hit Helms in the abdomen, chest and neck, Watts said. Stitched him pretty good there I suspect

The AA visitor who fired his weapon and killed (stopped) the suspect had a concealed weapons permit, police said.

Police declined to identify the shooter, saying an investigation is under way.The reporter and the paper are really mad that they cannot divulge the name of the "killer" at this time.

Police said they expect to release more information today after noon.

This is the second time in five weeks that a person with a concealed weapons permit has killed (stopped) a person in the Midlands.

In early March, an Irmo pizza delivery man shot and killed (stopped) an attacker who telephoned in a phony order. In that case, pizza man Christopher Miller shot and killed (stopped) Paul Andrew Sturgill, 17, as Sturgill and three others tried to rob him, police said.

At twilight Sunday, the Columbia AA center, a popular destination in the city’s Five Points area, was deserted. A sign on the front of the low-swung block building read, “No Money Left in Club Overnight.”

My (predicable) email response to this has gone out:

Has anyone at ABC news been told about this? Their prediction, played out on Friday night's 20/20 "If I only had a gun" was that any concealed handgun holder caught in just this sort of circumstance would freeze up, be the first eliminated, or shoot other people in a wild crossfire.

Interesting how real life just doesn't resemble fiction.

Even when they do everything they can to force fiction to resemble real life...

They lie, fabricate, omit the facts to fit their agenda...

I feel the onset of a lot of "duhs" coming from the cheap seats... :thumbs2: :smilelol5:

That ABC video reminds me of the news networks trying to make GM (?)trucks look like they were susceptible to blowing up back in the day...

Didn't they do the same thing with the Crown Vics most Law Enforcement agencies use???

You know when you sit on the side of the road, and a big truck comes up hits you at 70 mph...

Bad things happen??? Regardless if the gas tanks are ruptured or not???

I think that there is a great mass of Americans that believe that new math...2+2 really does equal 5...And if you are wrong...Thats ok, because at least you tried...That's what is important... :blowup

Man, that is NOT the place to rob. People who are trying to quit drinking may not be in the best of moods. I know when I stopped smoking ciggarettes, I was a BEAR !!
