Sorry, I'm not exactly sure where this should go, so if it gets moved I understand.

Does anyone know of a book published that has all Texas laws pertaining to firearms in general. I have the DPS book of laws pertaining to CHL's but I was needing more.

I have a friend who is also an LEO and he constantly argues with me about carrying weapons in general. When we're at the pit/range at the same time, he tells me that I better be glad I didn't get pulled over because I'm carrying illegally.

I never carry any loaded handguns in my vehicle unless travelling, everything is in my range bag and unloaded, or in factory cases. Sometimes I have multiple rifles in my backseat, but most of them are in cases as well. It's all the usual stuff. The only gun that is loaded and not in a case is my 16" AR. Any time I'm going somewhere like the pit or a long trip or whatever, I put it in a rack that hangs from the front seat backs of my truck.

I know I'm not carrying incorrectly. But for the life of me, I can't prove to him otherwise. He acts like I kicked his puppy when I tell him he's wrong. He's got the, "I'm a cop, so I'm always right about the law" attitude. My brother's an LEO with the same department and he won't listen to him either. Can you guys think of anything short of a ball peen hammer to the forehead to get him off my back? He's a good friend, but sometimes I want to strangle the guy! I'd like to be able to show him in print without looking through the whole book my brother lent me and finding each section.

Wrong approach. Ask him to show you which law you'd be violating. Tell him you want to comply with the law, so it would be great if he could point it out so that you can read it yourself.

Very good KBCraig. That way you can get him to prove he is right or obviously wrong.

I have a rather good book that seems to be a very comprehensive collection of laws relating to guns in Texas.

"The Texas Gun Owner's Guide" by Alan Korwin and Georgene Lockwood.

It was recommended by my CHL instructor.

i know a lot of cops who aren't too well versed in the law. when i was approving reports, half of them failed to meet the elements of the offense in the report. i ran into a cop yesterday (one of many) who thinks an exempt license plate means you are exempt from traffic laws. i tried to tell him there are only 6 laws that can be violated during an emergency, and two of which are applicable at any time, but he insisted that i was wrong.

i don't know if it's a failure to train on the department's part, or the officer just not being a professional and staying informed on the subjects of his/her profession.

there have been times where other officers have tried to 'school' me in the law. i just nod in agreement and inform their supervisor that some training is in order. sometimes you have to go even higher than that when the supervisor is the one encouraging the enforcement of laws that are not even on the books.

the law is always changing; legislaive changes, case law, precedents, DA memos. if you don't stay on top of it, you'll just sound like an idiot when you talk about it.

Title 10, Chapter 46. Texas Weapons Laws

Thanks TXI. I borrowed my brother's copy of the penal code. I wasn't sure if chapter 46 was the only one with any firearm laws. Seeing as how my friend has the same book, I don't know why he's giving me such grief about it. I think I'll take KBC's approach next time he says something.
