Denton Gun Show

I swung by the Denton Gun Show today - great show with lots of good stuff! I saw a couple of Colt Mustangs, a couple of little Llama Micromax's (guess that's what they were - little mini 1911 looking things), TONS of AR-15's, lots of Remington 870 home defense shotguns, Mossbergs, etc... One table had a ...well, two tables (at least) of old reloading dies of (what looked like) every caliber in my reloading manual... The parking lot was FULL! There was a sign placed at the front entrance stating (paraphrasing) "no cameras, all bags will be checked by security, no loaded firearms - including CHLs". Now, I didn't notice any legal 30.06 postings, but since I didn't have a holster for my Kahr P9 that's comfortable (I bought one today), I carry off-body in a Maxpedition Versipack - which would have been searched when I walked in the building.

Anyway, nice to see Denton getting these shows - was it illegal to CC for CHL holders?

There was a legal 30.06 posting right next to the guy taking the tickets, right after the lady who was taking money.

Ahh - I didn't even look for one inside - I thought they had to be posted on the exterior of the building, not once you were already inside the building, standing in line waiting to pay... Well, fortunately I decided to leave my Versipack in the truck, so I wasn't carrying anyway.

Hey I thought the same thing until I got to the ticket taker and there it was just to the right of him but before you actually entered into the gun show itself. I disarm myself anyway as I have only been to one gun show that wasn't posted 30.06 and it was in Sweetwater, Texas.

That first sign threw me for a loop because it was not in compliance and I was so of in shock, until I got to the ticket / Admission attendant. :cryin .

After setting up our table Friday afternoon, I caught a guy who had some Win. Small Pistol Magnum primers. Paid $45 for 1,000 for a buddy who needs. He told me Friday night the price was atrocious, but in the current market, it was great just to find some at any price. When I went back before the show opened this morning, the vendor had learned he was the only one in the show who had any and had evidently gone up on every type of primer he had left. $65 for the next 800 ...

Picked up an XD-9 Subcompact for $573 out the door ...

Another member had called requesting I try to locate the new Ruger LCR (Lightweight Compact Revolver) for him. Only one vendor had one (that I could locate anyway). With CT laser grip - a smoooooth $799. Gave 'em $100 to hold it until buddy can get there in the morning ...

I saw that Ruger LCR - very cool. Didn't seem much different than the S&W Airweight .38 sitting very close to it - is there any benefits to one over the other?

1.5 ounces difference - at a couple of hundred per ounce just now. ;-) There have been some writeups on the LCR that have details. I've got a class beginning at 0800, so about to hit the sack for now.

How crowded was the show, were any of you there when it opened, how long did it take to get in ? The last show I went to , there were no deals to be found. I went to their show at Mesquite and the cheapest I could find a new Springfield XD 9mm was 529 plus tax. Academy sells them for 499.00 everyday when they have them, same price for the XD.45 COMPACT, picked one of those up yesterday.

I love gun shows when there are deals to be found but I hate paying an admission just to have the opportunity to pay over retail for a gun or ammo.

Please post if you found any deals at the Denton show yesterday.

Thanks,

My opinion on deals - it's a deal if the person making the purchase feels like he got a good buy. While prices may be cheaper for X pistol at X gun store, does X gun store have X pistol in stock? Can you have it that day? What about the ammo? I could save a lot of money in shipping if I bought ammo at Y store, but how many times do I have to visit Y store before I find ammo on the shelves? My vehicle doesn't get the best mileage, so driving around to various stores has its own related cost impact.

I got to the show at 2pm - waited in line for about 30 seconds (at the most). It was very crowded - hardly any parking spaces were available. It wasn't overly packed though - plenty of room to walk around.

I'm sure prices were a little higher - but people were buying and happily paying the convenience tax! There was actually a couple of booths where people were complaining they hadn't sold anything all day. I felt bad - there was one boy in the back-left (in relation to the front door) of the store selling some kind of paracord gizmo he'd made - I should have bought one to support the entrepreneur in him, but didn't think about it in time. So, if any of you visit the show today, swing by and pay that kid a visit. One guy was selling primers for $6 per 100, and someone had just robbed him of a box - guy said he wanted a box (of 100) then held on to it for a moment while he was looking at the rest of the guy's display, then gave the box back to the seller and said he changed his mind. He'd already emptied the primers into his pocket and gave the guy back an empty box of primers.

Don't know about everyone else - but I paid $8 just to get some time out of the house! "rlol"

Steal a box of $6 primers? At a gun show? :eek6 That must have been some slight of hand opening the box, emptying it, re closing it, and giving it back to the seller without the seller noticing the box was empty.

You have got to remember that it is now a sellers market so finding "deals" are far and few. I think the $8 is well woth the 2-3 hours of entertainment and if I'm lucky enough to find a deal great, if not, at least I know the wife will be happy when I bring home the turkey jerky. "rlol"

Just for reference, I went to the Tyler Gunshow yesterday and was shocked at the crowd.

It a relatively small show, and with all the shows going on within 100 miles on the same day -I figured it might be nice to shop this one. But no fun was had with those crowds, it was just nuts. The line was out into the parking lot and folks (like me) stood there waiting to get in while in a steady rain :leaving

Even more surprising was to find what I wanted, a Glock 35 for $599. But no luck on primers at any price :???:

And yes, there was indeed a 30.06 sign right next to the money taker :rules:

I went on Saturday at about noon. The parking lot was completely full but finally I found a spot. It only took a couple of minutes at the door. The guy with small pistol primers was charging $70 per thousand when I talked to him. I decided to pass. However I did buy a couple of P-Mags at 19.95 apiece and there was another guy charging $24. Looks like supply is picking up on them.

Last time I went to GRB gun show I just brought my kimber in unloaded, slide locked back and the officer zip tied my gun and gave me a cup and a ticket to put my mags in and I just carried my gun around the show with me. Before I left I retrieved my ammo and a different officer without question asked me to "please wait till you get to your car" as he was handing me my mags.: Guess he already knew what I was up to. But still, on the walk back to the car if I percieved a sticky situation ahead just insert a mag, cut the zip tie and holster until needed. ;-)

yeah, provided you have time to do all that.

tactical thoughts aside, the "gentleman" at the ziptie booth gave me a stupendous amount of grief. Oddly enough, it was all about handing him a handgun without the magazine in it. He grilled me about it's location (my truck), whether I had another magazine on me (nope), and whether I was in possesion of any other ammo (nope). then he had the passive/aggressive gall to say to his "partner" "Oh, I gurantee you he has something on him..." as I walked over to buy my ticket.
The colossal amount of discourtesy by this "gentleman" was neither appreciated, nor warranted. I guess I didn't "respect his authority" enough to placate his miniscule ego.

he works for WRB holsters, and although I think their holsters are fine (I own one of their, pocket holsters), I will never buy anything from them again.

the funny thing is, I ended up having to return to the show, check my unloaded gun again, and once again informed The Man that the magazine was AGAIN left in the truck. this time he didn't enthrall me with his tired "tough-guy" cliche.

now, on to the actual show. I found what I was looking for (an AR buffer tube), and it was an equitable price, so I found the show to be rather satisfactory. there was a whole slew of chinese brass .223 ammo at one booth, for a decent fare, but I abstained, on simple principle alone ( ).
The show was great, though I did notice a couple of major Gun Dealers weren't there, and there were a bunch of the food vendors (jerkey, nuts, stuff), which is fine. all in all, a good experience, and I, as well, got the oppurtunity to handle an LCR.
veeeeeeeeery intewesting. man that thing's light. they should make one in .327FedMag, you know, since that's Ruger's baby.
hmmmmmmmmmm.

Not to steer the thread off track but the mention of the LCR and .327 Mag. caught my eye. It has been mentioned before on Gun Talk that Ruger said that the LCR couldn't handle the pressure of the .327 Mag and therefore couldn't be made for that round.
