The topic was going to be where do you store your ammo but someone would answer back and say what ammo or you'll never know!
Seriously, short of buying another fireproof safe, I have run out of room. I have purchased a couple of the larger size hard plastic Sentry containers from Wally World and have put some of it in there, hid some of it in my closet, and have some in a file cabinet. How important is it to have it stored in a fire proof container? I have thought about buying one of those large Jobsite tool boxes and putting all of it in there and keeping it locked. Is it better to keep it all inside rather than in the garage where the temperature can vary from 40 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees in the summer?

I'm surprised there's no answers to this yet.

I'm using a vacuum packer to seal up my surplus of reloads in 100 count lots and stacking them in bins. I have no idea if there's a down-side to this method but I figure it keeps moisture out and eliminates any need for silica packets.

Be it right or wrong I have ammo stored in the following:
Coffee Cans (both metal and plastic)
Factory bullet boxes (from both FMJ and Lead bullets)
Various other cardboard boxes
Plastic containers from Office Depot
Ziplock bags
Plastic ammo boxes
Factory ammo boxes retrieved from trash can at the range

Storage locations: Anywhere in the house I can put a box or a can of ammo without getting yelled at.

I do not store ammo in my fireproof safe. I need the space for other items and also if my ammo goes bang I want it to be in a situation where there is no pressure build up.

I use military surplus ammo boxes. Work good and cheap.

:iagree:

+1 on the Army surplus ammo boxes. They are waterproof, too. Don't ask me how I tested that.

In a mythbusters episode they tried cooking bullets in oven. They were pointed at the window to see if they would penetrate. None did. The important thing here was none of theses were chambered in a gun. It was quite a different story when they cooked a cambered gun.

Take from that what ever you wish.

i've been kind of wondering, with summer around the corner , the temperature in a closed up car can reach over 120 degrees.would this have any effects on a loaded gun left in the vehicle ?

How high did the temperature get? Did the gun actually go off?

You gotta think how hot it gets in the Iraq desert and all the ammo is stored in metal buildings. I don't think the Texas sun has anything on the Iraq desert.

I just stack my on shelves in the spare bedroom. There is no humidity here in the Panhandle to worry about.

I bought an old file cabinet and use that. It works well and I can lock it. Paid $40 off Craig's List.
