9mm ammo question

I have seen different types of 9mm ammo listed, such as;
1) 9mm luger, 9mm parabellum , 9mm NATO which I believe are all US standard 9mm rounds.

2) 9mm ball

3) 9mm long ball

4) 9mm short ball

5) 9mm browning long ball.

What is the difference and what do they fit. Standard US 9mm, I believe is 9mm X 19mm but I have also seen 9mm X 18 and 9mm X 21 and 9mm X 23.

The main thing that I am interested is info on the different “ball” rounds.

Thanks

9mm x 18mm fits Russian Makarov handguns.
I saw a 1968 Makarov in a pawn shop for $175 but did not
buy it because I considered it to be an "off brand" pistol,
it was 41 years old, and I was concerned that the ammo
would be harder to get than standard 9mm x 19mm.

'ball' is just another word for FMJ bullets which are generally was is issued to the military.

9mm is originally a German calibre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9mm_luger" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), but yes all 3 are the same: 9mm Luger = 9mm Para = 9mm NATO = 9x19mm

> 2) 9mm ball
9mm Luger FMJ

> 3) 9mm long ball
9mm Browning Long; more popular in Europe I believe

> 4) 9mm short ball
9mm Browning Short = .380ACP

> 5) 9mm browning long ball.
same as #3

9x18 = 9mm Makarov; Russian pistol calibre
9x21 - This was popular in Europe for pistol competition use in countries where civilians can't own "military" calibres such as 9mm Luger
9x23 - high pressure 9mm design for action pistol competition; not very popular. I think only Winchester makes factory ammo for it.
