I think I saw a few of those at the show today

Reminds me of this thread from 2006 where the Guardian ran the "news" story about a shop owner in London finding <gasp> a .22 short cartridge on the street in front of his store. Police responded quickly to retrieve and secure the dangerous object, and to investigate this potentially deadly crime.

Police also discovered a military-style weapon, ammunition and drugs buried "quite deep" underneath some paving in the backyard. About 500 rounds of ammunition was seized.

How do you do this?

I'm assuming that's in Australia ... where the lad, like most criminals, did not run down and turn his rifle in to the authorities (who probably used a metal detector while searching his property) ...

Since it was a rental property, it could have belonged to the owner or a former resident. I'd bet many normally law-abiding citizens had to make a difficult moral choice as to whether they should obey the law or dig a deep hole in their back yard when the authorities demanded firearms be turned over for destruction.

You have to get a license for buying ammunition? Or you can only buy certain kinds of ammunition?

It's Australia, they gave up their guns for safety. To own a firearm in Australia, it's about like going through the Class 3 process here.

You're getting a preview of what certain elements of our society (current leadership) would like to see right here. At this moment in the formerly great state of Illinois (now Lesser Chicago) you must have a Firearms Owners Identification Card (FOID) to purchase ammunition. The type and caliber is not restricted at this time ot my knowledge.

I believe (opinion only) that we may see proposals to limit the type and caliber of firearms available, i.e., no commonly used military calibers, 9mm, 7.62, 5.56, 7.62, etc., as the "reasonable" arguement will be that those calibers have primarily a military intent, and the civilian has no need for such things. You're bolt action .22, bolt action .270 and Over/Under bird gun will morte than suffice for your "reasonable" needs.

Yea, then they will come along and claim single shot and bolt action guns to be a danger too and we will be fighting to try to keep air guns and sling-shots. Just because some anti-freedom nuts want to steal our rights from us doesn't mean it will or has to happen. We have enough pro-2A people in Congress to stop them but only if we vastly increase our activism. That means calls, letters, e-mails, faxes and visits to their offices if possible. It also means signing up more NRA members and members to other pro-2A organizations and groups. It means donating money and time. It means even when we get sick of doing it we have to double our effort. It means sacrificing that soda or cup of coffee or pack of smokes for a while so we can spend the money on our rights and insure the rights of our progeny. I don't except that Obama and his lapdogs have the power or the strength to lie enough and manipulate enough to strip us of our rights. I am ready for a fight. Let's go Berry!
